THE MUSEUM
SUPPORT FROM LOCAL BODIES
COUNCILLOR HOPEFUL
Confidence that the ;local bodies ot Canterbury would;;: soon agree -to give financial assistance: to the Canterbury Museum was expressed at the meeting of-the Christchurch City Council last evening by the Deputy-Mayor, Cr. J. S. Barnett, who reported 1 on the recent conference of ' local bodies which dispussed' the proposal -to. make •extensions to; .the.- museum as a: .centennial ’ memorial for ; the Canterbury Province in 1950.
This conference decided- "that the time is not-opportune to .proceed with the proposed additions,”" but that--, the proposal should be reconsidered in the future. Another resolution passed by the conference was: “That this -conference, while- regretting' the inability - of local bodies to adopt the proposal at present, conveys to the museumauthorities the hope that in the near future a more favourable decision may be arrived at." Cr. Barnett claimed that the : last conference on the - museum could not be called abortive. • Many local bodies would, he thought, contribute if a conference were, called , later, i. With few exceptions the counties adjacent to the city failed to send delegates to the conference or otherwise indi-.
cate their views. With the exception . of Heathcote and New Brighton, the .city’s, neighbours took no interest. In r the conference. Yet counties .beyoiui; Ashburton had •, agreed." to support. the : "project. He thought" the, sentiment in.'., favour of' “ helping the musetn wai growing- rapidly. * *
