WAR PLANS IN DANZIG
Anti-Tank Defences Erected SITUATION MORE TENSE Troops at Military Exercises (VXITXD PHESS ASSOCIATION—COPTEIGHT.) (Received July 21, 1 a.m.) LONDON, July 20. German sappers are speeding up the anti-tank defences in Danzig facing the Polish frontier near Gdynia. Military lorries,- without registration plates, brought 20 anti-tank guns and ammunition to Danzig. Several hundred soldiers took part in military exercises in Langfuhr, which is a Danzig suburb. They wore field-grey uniforms with the sign, “S.S.” and also a swastika on their steel helmets, and carried new rifles. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” states that the Danzig police have been reinforced by from 3000 to 4000 men “because of the necessity of protecting the city from the Polish Army.” The Berlin correspondent of the United Press states that the situation is described as slightly more tense. Military preparations in Danzig are continuing. The police have arrested 20 Danzig residents, former members of Marxist organisations. They are accused of treasonable activities, preparing dynamite attempts, and maintaining contact with a hostile foreign Power. Germany is expected to have 2,000,000 men in arms at the end of August. Heavy troop movements continue night and day. The Warsaw correspondent of "The Times” states that the Polish authorities have sent two protests to the Danzig Senate complaining of interference with customs officials and unjust dismissals from the shipyards. “The Times” states that a hitch has also developed in the British credits to Poland, which insists that she must buy arms where she can. The British Cabinet has noted approvingly the Polish warning against a putsch in Danzig. The German News Agency reports that a Danzig customs official shot and wounded a Polish border guard near Postelau. It is alleged that the Pole, who was standing on Polish territory, fired without warning, at which the Danziger fired in selfdefence. A Warsaw message says the Danzig police are reported to have arrested a Polish Army officer. Colonel Sobocinski. No details are available.
