ANNUAL BALL

CANTERBURY AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE One of the most popular events in the social calendar of the year in Christchurch is the annual ball given by the staff and students of Canterbury Agricultural College at the college hall at Lincoln. Last year, because of illness, the ball had to be abandoned, so this year’s gathering, held last night, was anticipated with more than usual. eagerness. It was a great success. The decorations, as usual were elaborate and carried out with 'much skill and attention to detail. The entrance hall was gay with tier upon tier of lovely cinerarias, the long corridors were canopied with vari-coloured streamers, banked with greenery, and lit with coloured lights, a touch of realism being introduced by an occasional fearsome-looking skeleton. In the ballroom, where music was played by Fritz Seymour’s orchestra, baskets of mimosa and clusters of balloons were suspended from the ceiling, Chinese lanterns were arranged in front of the stage, and the lights were reflected from a revolving globe of mirrors. The guests were welcomed by Professor E. R. Hudson, director of the college, and Mrs Hudson. Mrs Hudson wore a frock of black net with deep yoke and coatee of ivory broderie, eyeletted with black and silver thread. She was presented by the ball committee with a bouquet of abutilons and narcissi. Mrs W. O. Rennie wore a frock of black lace and a black coatee embroidered in red in daisy design. Mrs Lewis Morrison wore a black matalasse frock, conventionally patterned in white and finished with a spray of shaded flowers at the neckline. Mrs J. W. Calder’s frock and fitting coatee of brown satin-patterned cloque were brightened with pink flowers on the bodice. Mrs A. Flay wore a pink-beige lace frock with narrow vari-coloured ribbons outlining the neck and falling loose at the back. Mrs J. H. Kirkness wore a frock of midnight blue crepe, and Mrs Percy Stevens a black flat crepe frock with shoulder posy of red flowers. Amongst the many others present were Mesdames J. G. L. Vernon, A. H. Tocker, W. A. Johnston, H. J. Butler, W. G. Macartney, G. W. R. Osborne, Kenneth Meyers, Burnett Dalgety, R. Morrish, R. Ballinger, Iversen, D.
