RESIGNATION OF ENGINEER

* CHEVIOT COUNTY COUNCIL WORK PRAISED BY MEMBERS Mr R. L. Lindsay tendered his resignation as engineer, at a meeting of the Cheviot County Council. The chairman moved that the resignation be accepted with regret, and commented on the excellent work that had been carried out by Mr Lindsay, and of the harmonious relationship that existed among the engineer, council, and the staff. Cr. Foster, in seconding the motion, endorsed the chairman’s remarks. Cr. J. Paton presided. Others present were: Crs. D. McLaren, N. R. Wil-' kinson, J. D. E. Winskill, W. L. Foster, M. C. Hyde, and J. F. MacFarlane. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands dealing with the resumption of the Conway Domain as a temporary landing ground for aeroplanes It was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the engineer to inquire into the present position. It was decided to call for tenders for the two Leamington bridges. The secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board forwarded the estimates for the current year. The council agreed that because of the burden on the land caused by the ever-in-creasing hospital rating, the time had arrived for the whole system of hospital maintenance to be reviewed. It was considered that the maintenance of hospitals was a matter for the Government and the council favoured the holding of a national sweepstake as a means of raising the money. It was decided that-the county was too scattered to be able successfully to arrange local centennial celebrations. While the council agreed that the restoration of the Canterbury Museum was a worthy object it was not in a position to make, a grgnt towards the cost of financing the work. The county was asked to provide £303. The council will be represented by Cr. W. L. Foster, at the meeting of the New Zealand Counties’ Association. The following rates were fixed for the-year 1939-1940: —General: Id in the £ on unimproved value. Hospital: 9-16 d in the £ on unimproved value.
