MUSEUM PROPOSAL APPROVED

DECISION OF MALVERN COUNTY COUNCIL “FINANCING SHOULD BE POSTPONED” The proposal to commemorate the centennial of the province by enlarging the Canterbury Museum, for which purpose a levy would be made on local bodies, was approved by the Malvern County Council, but the council was of the opinion that the financing of the proposal should be postponed for ope year. The Malvern Electric Power Board notified that the Power Board rate would in future be collected by the council, as it was impossible for the board’s present staff to collect it satisfactorilv. Adams, Chamberlain, and Cullen; .reserves Messrs Adams, Deans, Morrison, and W lt S was reported that during the summer and autumn the volume of water carried by the Kowai and Hawkins rivers appeared to have been at a minimum for a longer period, than has been previously recorded. Alternating started in the Kowai water race system on February 16 and was continued until June 21, when a full flow was available. For a similar period the Hawkins water race system was maintained solely from the; springs in the riverbed, and the flow of water in the river is only now apparent. FARMERS’ UNION WEST MELTON BRANCH MEETS The monthly meeting of the West Melton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held recently. Mr H. E. Cross presided. The desirability of the branch conducting a pasture competition was discussed, but no action was taken. Members and other farmers were urgently asked to supply to the provincial executive confidential copies of their farm accounts over recent years, to be used as evidence for the inquiry into the sheepfarming industry. Dr I W. Weston, farm economist at Lincoln College, led an informal discussion on money problems. CULVERDEN BRANCH . MEETS A meeting of the Culverden branch of the New Zealand Fanners’ Union was held recently, when a lecture by Mr T. Morrison, of Lincoln College, was given on “Insect Pests.” The president (Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane) presided. The lecturer dealt with the two grass grubs Porina and Zealandica Odontrian illustrating with charts their life cycle and habits. Mr Morrison said that no remedy of eradication had been found yet, though he quoted certain formulae that had given up to 98 per cent, results.
