RESTRICTION OF PARKING

LIMIT IN BUSINESS AREA

PROPOSALS TO ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

A parking restriction of 60 minutes, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the business area of Ashburton, was included in a number of recommendations put before the Borough Council last evening by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr (i. L. Laurenson). Traffic control in the borough was recently put in the hands of the Transport Department and the recommendations arose out of a recent visit to the town by the Commissioner.

The time limit for parking applies to East street (Kermode street to Cameron street), West street (business side c. ly, Moore street to Cameron street), Tancred street (Cass street to Park street), Burnett street (Cass street to West street), Havelock street and Cameron street (East street to Baring square). It was also recommended that no angle-parking be permitted in East street (the whole length), in West street (business area), or in Burnett and Tancred streets (Cass street to West street). In Cass street, angleparking was proposed on the west side only, the angle. of parking to be 30 degrees to the kerb. Other recommendations were:—The placing of the pedestrian crossing at the railway station at right angles to East street; the setting back of the taxi and bus stands in East street a distance of 16 feet to remove the obstruction to the pedestrian crossings at the Burnett street intersection; parallel parking instead of “front-in” at the railway station to obviate the necessity for backing vehicles across East street on departure from the station; the allotment of a taxi stand for three cars immediately south of the main entrance to the railway station and a “feeder” stand for four cars south of the goods loading dock, with a private car stand for parallel parking at th - ; north end of the station; the prohibition of turning in East street except at intersections.

The' recommendations were referred to the by-laws committee, it being suggested that Inspector W. G. Letham be consulted by the committee. A map showing the location of accidents in the borough in the last two years, and indicating their nature, was also submitted by the Commissioner. Accompanying the map were details of each accident.

The first of a series of reports on traffic control in Ashburton was received from the Chief Traffic Officer (Mr E. Wilson). It was stated that the inspectors had been concerned largely during June with initial work of educating the public to the new demands made on them. Points emphasised were the free movement of pedestrian traffic, a reduction in the speed of vehicles and the decreasing of the tendency to cut corners. Motor traffic generally had considerably improved, but there was still room for improvement in the control of bicycles. The Mayor (Dr. G. I. Miller) said the report showed that placing the control of traffic with the department had been a wise move. SUBDIVISIONS IN ALLENTON > BOROUGH COUNCIL TO RECEIVE REPORT The preparation of a town-planning scheme for Allenton with provision for the subdivision of the larger areas of land in that district was mentioned at the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening as desirable, and the by-laws committee, with power to add, was asked to report. It was stated that adequate land for reading was required before the district was built on extensively. The council passed a motion prohibiting the erection of buildings in Allenton contravening the town-plan-ning scheme. Pending an arrangement between the Borough Council and the Ashburton County Council about the Allenton Fire Brigade, it was decided to ask the present committee and brigade to, continue in office in the meantime. A suggestion that bicycle stands be erected on the East street reserve at Burnett, Tancred, and Moore streets, to obviate congestion in front of shops, was referred to the by-laws committee. The Ashburton Rugby Union was granted the right of removal of the dressing shed, which it proposes to build near the football ground in the domain, to meet a request for security for a loan of £2OO from the New Zealand Union. . . It was reported that building permits to the value of £1893 had been issued and included authority for two new dwellings. There were present—The Mayor (Dr. G. I. Miller), Crs. J. Connor, S. Osborne, E. Buchanan, J. Shaw, H. W. H: Smallbone. A. H. Fenn, A. A. McDonald, H. W. Sherratt, and E. C. Bathurst. The statement of receipts showed that revenue for the last two weeks had totalled £3ll 7s 4d, the chief items being rents £92, water supply £33, and abattoir fees £B6. The attention of the council was drawn in a letter from the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) to the fact that Arbor Day had been fixed for Wednesday, August 2, and the council was asked to arrange for suitable celebration on this or some other convenient date. The letter was referred to the reserves committee and it was decided to invite school children to take part in any ceremony arranged. EALING WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ANNUAL BALL HELD The Ealing Women’s Institute held its annual ball in the Ealing Library Hall, which was decorated with red and green streamers. The music was played by Kelland’s orchestra. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs L. J. Galletly. Among those present were:—The president, Mrs E. H. Davis, Mr and Mrs J. H. Good, Mr and Mrs C. Keen, Mr and Mrs W. L. Sandrey, Mr and Mrs R. Keith, Mr and Mrs L. Galletly, Mr and Mrs J. Gibb, Mr and Mrs H. Galletly, Mesdames K. J. Mackenzie, G. South, L. Colville, R. G. Simpson, J. Barrett, E.
