CUMBERLAND’S BOW DAMAGED
MISHAP WHILE BERTHING AT NEW PLYMOUTH
NEW PLYMOUTH, December £4. Damage was suffered by the 11,000ton steamer Cumberland last night When she struck her bow against the New Plymouth breakwater while being berthed.
As she was being brought in to her berth she headed towards the, breakwater, the intention being to turn her about and go to the wharf stern first. However, the way the ship had on carried her on to the breakwater, and the concrete wall was sheered away to a depth of about eight inches over a length of about four feet, and at one point there was a larger hole knocked in about 20 inches. The bow of the Cumberland was appreciably twisted and flattened, and repairs will have to be made, though it is unlikely that the ship will have to be docked in New Zealand.
The mishap may be the subject of an inquiry.
