CHRISTMAS EVE AT RANGIORA
BUSY EVENING FOR SHOPS
FESTIVITY WEEK ENDS
Hundreds of country visitors arrived in Rangiora on Christmas Eve. Heavy showers fell early in the afternoon, but by night the weather had cleared, and although the sky was overcast no further rain fell.
Large numbers of people thronged High street, which was decorated tfith greenery and festoons of coloured lights.
The shops and stores, which were open till 10 p.m., experienced a busy evening, some shops having a record turnover for Christmas Eve. . The second lucky spot competition which marked the close of festivity week in the town was decided at IV.ou pm, when the navements on either side of the main street were Packed with people. The winner was Mrs A. A King, who was presented with the first prize of £lO by the Mayor tMr C W. Tyler). The second prize was won by Mr J. Mehrtens, and the third prize by Mr H. R. Lilley. Christmas Day and yesterday passed quietly. The weather was overcast on both days, with occasional heavy showers of rain. . , ~ .. . There was a celebration or midnignt Mass at the Roman Catholic Church and a Mass on Christmas morning. Three services were held at St. Johns Anglican Church, two at the Presbyterian Church, and one at the Methodist Church on Christmas morning, and a special meeting took place in the Salvation Army Hall on Christmas night.
CELEBRATION OE CHRISTMAS
RANGIORA METHODIST CHURCH
A reading of John Masefield's Christmas play, “The Coming of Christ,” was given in the Rangiora Methodist Church on Saturday evening. With an effective setting of drapings and appropriate incidental music, the presentation was an impressive one. There was a good congregation. Parts were read by Misses M. Stanton and G. Ryan, the Rev. H. Ryan, Messrs A. V. Miller, E. C. Horsley, C. S Avers, C. C. Ayers, F. A. Lane, R. H." Ellis. L. Thwaites, T. Chambers, D. Storer, and H. M. Denton. Members of the choir later sang Christmas carols in various parts of the town. They were entertained at supper by Mr and Mrs G. Edlin and Mesdames A. V. Miller and H. A. Bennett.
Special Christmas music was given by the choir at the services on Sunday under the direction of the 6hosrmaster (Mr F. A. Lane). Solos were sung by Miss H. Smith (Christchurch) and Messrs H. L. Dodge, E. C. Horsley, C. C. Ayers, and K. H. B. Strong (Wellington). The services vfere conducted by the Rev. H. Ryan and the Rev. L. C. Horwood (Kaiapoi).
PERSONAL NOTES
RANGIOBA Mr R. Mclntyre (District Public Works Engineer in North Canterbury) and Mrs Mclntyre are on holiday in the North island. Mr Sylvester Devlin (Bruce Bay), who has been visiting his brother, Mr L. P. Devlin, left for Wellington last evening. Mr and Mrs A. B. Johnson are in Wellington, where they intend to spend the New Year. Mr and Mrs A. K. Hawkey are on holiday in Timaru. Mr and Mrs A. C. Fraser are spending the New Year at Temuka. Mr and Mrs G. A. Robertson (Park street) will leave to-day for a holiday tour of Nelson,
DOYLESTON SWIMMING BATH
At a meeting at Doyleston of those interested in swimming, the following were elected a committee to take charge of the swimming bath in the Doyleston School grounds:—Messrs R. Bishop (chairman), D. Goulden (secretary and treasurer), J. Scott, J. Goss, and Miss M. Greenan. School children will have the use of the bath free. Another meeting will be held to adopt rules and regulations.
GIRLS’ MISSION CIRCLE AT GLENROY
The Glenroy Girls’ Missionary Circle held a sale of work at the residence of Mrs W. E. Dennis, Brockley, Glenroy. The sum of £7, the proceeds, was given to the China Inland Mission. The stall-holders were:—Jean Bain (treasurer), Nancy Phillips, Betty Bain, Alwyn Dennis, Judith Marsh, Kathleen Pearce Audrey Pearce, Ngaire Keith, Mary Marsh, Geraldine Dennis, IJlaine Dennis, Heather Bruce,; flower-girls, Cicely Keith, Rosena Bain, Doreen Pearce.
The Rev. G. N. Garlick, Greendale, gave an address.

MEETING OF AMURI CLUB
ARRANGEMENTS MADE FOR GYMKHANA
Mr M. Bethell presided at a meeting of the committee of the Amuri Cob and Pony Sports Club, when final arrangements were made for the annual gymkhana to be held next Saturday, at Rotherham. It was decided to hold extra classes for very young riders (if entries warrant) in events for children under 15 years. It was decided to give special trophies for most points for children under 15, and for most points gained by rider over 15 and under 18 years in the adult events. The secretary reported a long list ot gifts to the prize fund. It was decided to engage the Hawarden Highland Pipe It was agreed that in view of the Hurunui Racing Club having given up Boxing Day as the date of its annual meeting future gymkhanas be held on Boxing Day.

RESULTS OF JUNIOR MATCHES
NORTH CANTERBURY SUBASSOCIATION
Following are the results of junior grade matches played in the North Canterbury Cricket Sub-Association's junior competitions on Saturday;— Rangiora High School v. Eyreton Eyreton beat High School by 171 runs on the first innings. In reply to Eyreton’s total of 216, High School made 45. The top scorer was M. Smith, with 16 runs. C. Bennett and P. Coleman each made six rU ßowling for Eyreton, I. Giles took six wickets for 21 runs, and C. Merrin four for 14. High School followed on, to make 196 A. L. Lockhart contributing 123 runs. The next highest scorer was E. Feary, who made 21. Bowling for Eyreton, C. Giles took four wickets for 17 runs, and F. Beal one for 11.
Rangiora v. Amberley
Rangiora secured a five-point win against Amberley. Rangiora, in the first innings, made 205 runs, to which Amberley replied with 77. Amberley followed on, losing two wickets for 16 runs before rain stopped play. Bowling for Rangiora in the first innings, W. Steele took four wickets for 23 runs, and G. Griffin took three wickets for 11. . In the second innings, Steele took one for six, and T. Power took one for eight.
Sefton v. Kaiapoi
The match between Sefton and Kaiapoi at Sefton resulted in a draw. Sefton, batting first, made 173 runs (L. Giles 92, B. Mchrtens 40. 5 1 . H, Ford 12). Bowling for Kaiapoi, B. Carter took seven wickets for 54 runs. At stumps, Kaiapoi had scored 65 for four wickets (A. Burns 18, not out, H. Pearce 16, not out, B. Carter 13).

GLENROY SCHOOL
Beacuse of the prevalence of measles in the district the Glenroy School concert was postponed, and instead an afternoon was held at the school, when the prizes were presented by Mrs W. E. Dennis, the chairman’s wife. For an hour before the presentation of the prizes the children entertained with items from a programme prepared by themselves.
SUNDAY SCHOOL PRIZES
PRESENTATION AT ASHLEY BANK
, The annual prize-giving of the Ashley Bank Presbyterian Sunday School took place recently. There was a large congregation. The Rev. R. Taylor gave an appropriate address. Special hymns were sung by the children. Mrs D. L. Roberts was the organist. The prizes were presented by Mr Taylor, who thanked the teachers for their work throughout the year. Each phild received a book.
GLENROY ANGLICAN CHURCH
At the Christmas church service of the Glenroy Anglican Church the annual prizes were presented to Sunday School children by Mr W. Hall. Those presented with prizes were Lyla Phillips (special), Enid and David Stone (specials), Hugh Richards, Ngaire Keith, Cecily Keith, Dermot Richards, Jim and lan Cran, Daphne Phillips, Alison Roseveare, Marion Davies, Gaye Hall.
FUNCTION AT KOWAI BUSH
The Sunday School teachers at Kowai Bush, Mr and Mrs Hay, entertained pupils and their parents to tea recently. The children gave a programme of hymns and sacred recitations. Mrs Hay was accompanist. Mr W. McSkimming, of Glentunnel, addressed the children. Mr Hay presented the prizes. June and Jack Lord won the prizes for highest marks and Barbara Gold the prize for memorising Scripture. June Lord, for the pupils., presented Mrs Hay with a bouquet, and Mr Bryson thanked Mr and Mrs Hay for their hospitality.
