NEW BRIGHTON GALA
OPENING CEREMONY PERFORMED
In unseasonable and overcast weather and a severe sandstorm, the New Brighton Gala, organised by the New Brighton Municipal Band, was officially opened on Saturday afternoon by the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister for Industries and Commerce. He was accompanied by Mrs Sullivan. With him the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith), and Mrs Smith, the Deputv-Mayor of Christchurch (Mr J. S- Barnett), Mr and Mrs E. H.’Langford, and Mr and Mrs J. R. C. Robertson. In introducing Mr Sullivan, Mr Smith said that the proceeds of the gala would assist the members of the band to attend the centennial celebrations in Wellington. Mr Sullivan said that he always appreciated the assistance given by the band during the years of the depression. The band was responsible for a large part in the progress of New Brighton. The New Brighton beach would become deservedly more popular as people were attracted by the gala; and when New Brighton joined the city improvements could be carried out to' the beach, and these would repay New Brighton for what it had done for the citizens of Christchurch in the past. Mr Barnett said that amalgamation would be to the advantage of both bodies.
In a fancy dress parade the following were awarded prizes:—Betty Lea, Ngaire Lea, Dorothy Doress, Betty Horwell, Jessie Barter. Doris Nuttall. Betty Snell, Norma Simmonds, and Colleen Vogel. There was a large attendance in the evening, when a bonfire and fireworks display was held. The band played selections, and the stalls and side-shows were well patronised.
