SOUTH CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT

QUALIFYING GAMES IN RINKS COMPETITION

[THE PRESS Special Service.! TIMARU. December 26. Rinks play in the South Canterbury Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament started at Timaru to-day, three greens. Kia Toa, Park, and West End, being used by the competing teams. Thirty-six entries were received, including three from Dunedin, two from Christchurch, one from Oamaru, and one from Ashburton, Ram fell in the early hours of the morning, resulting in the greens being heavy when play began, but a strong north-east breeze soon dried them, enabling play to be carried out according to programme. . , Under the new system of play, all rinks with three wins qualify for post-sectional play. At the conclusion of the fourth round the following had qualified:— Four Wins—Parry (Waimate), Currie (West End), Maclaren (West End), Madsen (Opawa), Entwhistle (West End). Three Wins —Boulter (Fairlie), Hamlyn (Ashbury), Wallwork (Kia Toa), Thomson (Timaru). Ellis (Ashbury), Stewart (West End). All qualifying rinks will start on level terms in post-sectional play.

Play in the South Christchurch bowling tournament, which was kegun yesterday, was postponed until to-day because of the rain during the morning. In the rinks section play will now probably be confined to one day, beginning at 8.30 a.m. to-day.
