WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

REDCLIFFS BRANCH Mrs P. Mauger presided at the monthly meeting of the _ Redcliffs branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The garden circle reported that a successful party had been held at the home of Messrs Bassett and Boulton, Richmond Hill. A donation of 7s will be given to Mr Bassett for the Sumner Beautifying Association. Mrs Davies thanked Mrs Mauger for her effort to make the outdoor gatherings successful. Greetings for the coming season were received from the president (Mrs Roberts), who is visiting the North Island. It was reported that arrangements had been made to visit the gardens at Edmonds’ factory in February. Winners of competitions were:—Best bloom: Mrs Anderson 1, Mrs Ebert 2, Mrs Bamford 3. Covered exercise book: Miss Killner 1, Mrs Ebert 2. A debate, “Should Married Women Work?” was judged by Mrs McDonnell, of the Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute, the winners being Misses Killner and Gates, who took the affirmative. Mrs McCracken and Miss Burson were their opponents.

HAREWOOD BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Harewood branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Highsted Road Hall. Mrs Fraser presided and welcomed visitors from Styx, Yaldhurst,. and Papanui-Waimairi branches. One new member was welcomed. It was announced that the children’s picnic would be held at the Botanic Gardens next month. Christmas greetings and an exchange of gifts between members and friends, and community singing were held. Music supplied by Mrs Hayton proved most enjoyable. The children were given balloons and fruit. A suitcase competition was won by Mrs W. Webb (Harewood). Results of other competitions were:— Bloom; Mrs Hayton and Mrs Lynn (equal) 1, Miss Townley and Miss Nunweek (equal) 3. Vase of flowers: Miss Nunweek 1, Mrs Guy 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Collison, Housten, and Stunhart. GREENPARK BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Greenpark branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held recently, with Mrs Leonard Dulieu presiding. The balance-sheet from the concert which was given by “The Happiness Boys” showed a credit of £ls 10s. It was decided to give a donation toward the provincial executive hamper The hostesses were Mesdames Ablett, Bearman, and Dempsey. Results of the monthly competitions were:—Plate of six melting moments: Mrs Ablett 1, Miss D. Watkins 2, Mrs Bearman 3. Best lettuce: Mrs P. S. Dulieu 1, Mrs Dempsey 2, Mrs Bearman 3. Prettiest print apron: Mrs! Dempsey and Mrs Bearman (equal) 1.1

METHVEN BRANCH t The December meeting of the Methven branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union took the form of a garden party, held at the home of Mrs T. Harrison. There was a good attendance of members and friends. During the afternoon, competitions were held, the winners being Miss E. Stone, Miss C. Holmes and Miss Ella Lowery. The committee acted as hostesses. BROADFIELD BRANCH Mrs Wallace presided at the December meeting of the Broadfield branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. A welcome was extended to Miss E. Boyle. It was decided to hold a picnic next month. A competition. for a Christmas gift, costing not more than Is, was won

by Mrs Boyle, with Miss M. Wallace second, and Miss P. Wallace third. Hostesses at the tea hour were Miss M. Wallace and Miss D. Neiman. HORORATA BRANCH Mrs T. E. Pearson presided at the monthly meeting of the Hororata branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs W. Thwaites in the death of her sister. Good business was done at the bring and buy stall. Competitions resulted: Ginger nuts, Mrs B. Hockridge 1 and 3, Miss Thorne 2; bloom, Mrs T. E. Pearson 1 and 3, Mrs Betts 2. Hostesses were Misses Thorne and Felton. KOWAI BUSH BRANCH Mrs W.
