WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
TUAHIWI The December meeting of the Tuahiwi Women’s Institute, held in the Tuahiwi Hall, took the form of a children’s Christmas party. Mrs E. J. Corcoran presided. The party was considered one of the best children’s Christmas parties ever held at Tuahiwi. The committee entertained about 100 children, half of their number being children of institute members. Many local visitors were also present. Mrs Lennane’s pupils contributed items. ~ ■ Results of competitions were.— Bloom, Mrs Teuki 1. Mrs T. Ryan 2, Mrs F. Hutana 3: crayon work. Mrs T. Ryan 1, Mrs Reuben, jun.. 2, Mrs Reuben, sen. 3; piece of Christmas cake, Mrs W. Crane 1. Mrs H. Harris 2, Mrs Reuben, sen., 3. , , The hostesses were Miss Gibbs and Mrs Gibbs. TEMPLETON Mrs H. B. Curragh presided at a meeting of the Templeton Women’s Institute. The roll call was, “Where I was Born.” On behalf of members, the president made a presentation to Mrs Chatterton, a recent bride. After the business session, the children were admitted to their annual Christmas party. Father Christmas arrived laden with gifts and good things for the children. Adults and children took part in games and competitions, and enjoyed the afternoon tea provided by members. KIRWEE The monthly meeting of the Kirwee Women’s Institute was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral lounge, with Miss E. Westaway presiding. The roll call was “What I look at first in my newspaper.” Members stood in silence as a token of respect to Mrs A. Thompson and Miss Lucy Thompson in their bereavement. Competitions were: Cold summer drink. Mrs Turner 1, Mrs E. Thompson 2. Flowers, cluster, head, or spike: Mrs F. Candy 1, Mrs A. Anderson 2, Mrs E. Thompson 3. Large bloom; Mrs Candy 1, Mrs Anderson 2; small bloom, Mrs G. Hayes 1, Mrs E. Thompson 2, Miss E. Westaway 3. Buttonhole worked on calico in 10 minutes at meeting: Mrs E. Thompson 1, Mrs McMeckan 2, Ivlrs F. Candy 3. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Hayes and E. Thompson and Miss J. Anderson. The sum of 10s was voted to the institute housekeeping scheme, and 5s to the Maori welfare work in the North Island. Miss M. Kennedy gave an interesting talk on Geneva. Some members agreed to take a course in homecraft under the Association of Country Education next year if classes could be arranged. ROTHERHAM Mrs Robinson presided at the December meeting of the Rotherham Women’s Institute Correspondence was read from Miss Violet Macmillan offering a tutor from the Association for Country Education next year. A report of Miss Fogo's work in the Rangiora district was also read. It was decided to accept Miss Fogo’s services for a homecraft course while she is in the district. For the benefit of members who had not attended, the president gave an account of the group meeting held at Hawarden in November.
A demonstration of smocking was given by Miss J. Mclntosh, who displayed some finished articles, her beautiful work being much admired. Arrangements were completed for the children’s party and Christmas tree. Winners of home competitions were: Best Christmas gift costing Is; Miss Poulter 1, Miss J. Popplewell 2. Blooms: Large, Miss J. Mclntosh 1, Miss Poulter 2; small, Mrs Thomson 1, Mrs Flintoft 2. Best rose: Misses J. Popplewell and E. Dreaver (equal) 1. A table of articles made by returned soldiers, and a “bring and buy” stall were well patronised. Hostesses were Mrs Parker, Misses Poulter and M. Mclntosh.
