DECLARATION OF PEACE
FORMER ARAB REBEL LEADER
SERIOUS AMBUSH PRETEXTED BY AIR FORCE
JERUSALEM, December 19. Sheik Yessef Abdul Hamid, a former rebel Arab leader, for whom & reward of £SOO had been offered. made a peace declaration before Major-General R. N. Connor, the military commander in Jerusalem, and other officers.
'T have become a good man and I am not going to fight any more against the British. I love them like my own brothers," he declared. "You are messengers of peace and are restoring calm in Palestine. We -want no other ruler than King George.'* Royal Air Force aeroplanes discovered and machine-gunned armed terrorists who were lying in ambush in the Hebron hills for the arrival of Major-General Connor to attend the demonstrations of loyalty. Infantry were rushed up and a six-hour battle occurred in which a pilot and a soldier were wounded- Thirty Arabs were killed and 15 were captured in the battle.
Major-General Connor's British guard of honour left the demonstration to engage the Arabs and was reinforced by the Worcestershire* who were summoned by wireless. The Air Force observers prevented a serious ambush of the British military and civil administrators.
