CHRISTMAS PARTY
TRAVEL CLUB'S GUESTS
J The remarkable growth of the Can- [ terbury New Zealand Travel Club was shown at the Winter Garden last night, when the club's annual Christmas party was a notable success. The euests were welcomed by the Mayoress, Mrs R. M. Macfarlane, and by the chairwoman of the entertainment committee. Mrs H. T. J. Thacker, both of whom were presented with bouquets. Mrs Macfarlane wore a black lace frock and floral coatee, and Mrs Thacker wore a frock of black souple satin. The club's entertainment committee, who arranged the programme, had catered for the taste of all members—some played bridge, the majority danced to the music of the Bailey-Marston orchestra, and others greeted their friends and enjoyed the novel items that were presented. Carols were sung by waits, whose black clothes were realistically flaked with snow, and who carried storm lanterns to light them on their way. The singers, whose items were greatly appreciated, were a quartet trained by Mr Victor • Peters. A Russian ballet, danced by eight of Miss Peggy Holmes' pupils,. was enthusiastically encored. The dancers entered the ballroom to the music of tinkling bells, drawing a sleigh, on which was a twotier Christmas cake. An exhibition of the palais glide was given by Misses Yvonne Levvey and Theresa Ward, Messrs J. G. D. Ward and Charles Purchase, and so attractive did it prove that, in a few minutes, half the guests were practising the steps.
The Mayor, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, who was an honoured guest, said that the Travel Club was doing useful work in the city, and he thanked its president, Mr J. G. D. Ward, for the energy with which he directed its activities. He wished the club continued success, and its members a happy Christmas. Two overseas visitors—Mrs E. M. Watt, of London, and Mrs R. Ball, of Sydney—were specially welcomed by Mr Ward. '
The children of officers and airmen of the "Flying Training School at Wigram were entertained at a Christmas party recently. Father Christmas arrived by air and distributed gifts from a Christmas, tree which had been set up in the airmen's recreation room.
