SAFETY FIRST

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS Sir, —The following suggestions, if adopted, would solve the major part of the traffic problems with which the citizens of Christchurch are no doubt familiar at present. 1. The construction of subways (underground) at the bottle neck for the use of pedestrians (perhaps also of use in the event of air raids). 2. Elimination of trams and buses from the Square, and substitution by a series of bus or tramway stations approximately two blocks radius from the Square. 3. The elimination of trams and the substitution of the more efficient and flexible vehicles, trolley-buses or Diesel buses.

4. Substitute the left-hand driving rule in lieu of the present right-hand rule, and traffic on secondary roads giving way to main highways. 5. Traffic lights at main city intersections.

Safety should surely be a consideration for the future in addition to the present.—Yours, etc., TRAVELLER. December 20, 1938.
