RECORD BEATEN

MEN’S 220 YARDS BREASTSTROKE (press association telegram.) DUNEDIN, December 13. In a special attempt on the New Zealand 220 yards men’s breaststroke record of 3min 1 2-ssec, held jointly by the Empire Games representatives. L. Smith (Wanganui) and J. C. W. Davies (Taranaki). W. Dyson, of the Kiwi Club, the Otago 100 and 220 yards men’s breaststroke champion, succeeded in the Municipal Baths to-night in lowering the time to 3min 0 l-ssec. Dyson covered the first 100 yards in 76sec, and over the last 40 yards he put in a great sprint to finish strongly.

LANES TO BE ALLOTTED

DISCUSSION BY CENTRE

A decision that at the next three carnivals lanes should be allotted to swimmers in handicap events, was made last night at a meeting of the Canterbury Swimming Centre. It was also agreed that tlmekepers should be appointed to each lane for the three carnivals, and that in addition there should be two other timekeepers to take the time of the winner. The motions, which were carried unanimously, arose out of a discussion on a letter received from the Auckland centre describing the system of handicapping in operation there. It was further agreed that the duty of disqualifying competitors under the new 5 per cent, rule should be delegated to the timekeepers’ steward. An application from the Opawa Club to be given the right to swim the competitions for the Harris Cup at its carnival, was granted. That the Linwood Club should be allowed to hold its carnival on January 28, was also approved. Mr L. Anderson was elected to the handicapping committee to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr R. C, Hunter. Mr G. R. Laurie, who has l?een appointed to fill Mr Hunter’s place on the central executive, was welcomed by Mr J. Mackenzie, the president. At a special meting, which preceded the ordinary meeting, an amendment to the centre's rules to cover the question of transfers in accordance with a decision of the last Dominion conference, was carried unanimously.

DRAW FOR INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS

The following is the draw for the fifth round of the Inter-club swimming competitions to be held at the East Christchurch bath on Saturday next:— Open—East Christchurch v. Somerfield, Christchurch United v. Linwood, Hornby v. Opawa, Elmwood a bye. Women—Christchurch Ladies v. Opawa, Christchurch United v. East Christchurch Hornby v. Elmwood. The points in the competitions to date are as follows: —East Christchurch 3, Somerfield 3, Christchurch United 2, Linwood li, Hornby 11, Opawa 1. Women: Christchurch Ladies 3, East Christchurch 3, Christchurch United 3, Hornby I, Elmwood 1, Opawa 1.
