MAGISTRATE'S COURT
FRIDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) CASE ADJOURNED Douglas Walter Craig Wright, a painter, aged 30 (Mr C. V. Quigley), appeared on a charge of failing to comply with the terms of a probation order. The case was adjourned to November 14. BREACH OF ORDER Leonard Keith Aldridge, a miner, aged 30 (Mr C. V. Lester), appeared on a charge of breaking a probation order. He pleaded "guilty through ignorance." The probation officer (Mr W. H. Darby) said that Aldridge was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within two years on a charge of mischief in July. He had been ordered to take out a prohibition order, which he had since broken, and had failed to pay instalments as required by the Court. His trouble appeared to be over-indulgence in liquor. After hearing the representations of counsel, the Magistrate adjourned the case to January 19, agreeing to give the accused another chance of complying with the terms of his release. THEFT CHARGE Edward James Shirley, a clerk, aged 31 (Mr W. R. Lascelles), appealed for sentence on a charge of the theft at Lyttelton between July 8 and September 21 of £25 19s 9d, the property of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand,' Ltd. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop said he had nothing to add to what he already had told the Court except to say that he had previously known the accused for four and a half years, and was very surprised to see him in the position he was now in. "You have wrecked your own life, young man," the Magistrate told the accused, adding that he considered further punishment unnecessary. Shirley was admitted to probation for a period of two years, a condition being that he refunds the stolen money.
