SCHOLARSHIPS IN ATHLETICS

SELECTION OF NEW ZEALANDERS

STUDY IN SOUTHERN

CALIFORNIA

The American athletic coach, A. L. Fitch, i» expecting to receive shortly confirmation of an offer from the University of Southern California to give' scholarships to New Zealand students. It is proposed that the scholarships should be available to students aged about 20 or 21 with both scholastic and athletic qualifications. Fitch said last evening that it was proposed that the selection of students should be made by the New Zealand Government, upon recommendations from the educational authorities. It was originally intended that there should be two scholarships, each worth about £3OO. and providing four years’ tuition at the university. It was now possible that four would-be available, each for a two-year period. The successful students would be required to find for themselves the cost of transport and board.

He said he did not want to enter into correspondence at this stage with likely applicants, particularly as he was awaiting confirmation of the offer in writing.
