RIDER IN ROAD RACE INJURED

W. WILMOTT ADMITTED TO ASHBURTON HOSPITAL

An accident on the Ashburton traffic bridge Involving injury to Walter Wilmott, aged 30, of Timaru, marred the Wairaate-to-Christchurch road cycle race on Saturday. A motor-truck owned by the Ashburton Power Board was stopped to give a clear passage to a bunch of riders who were approaching at a fast pace, but one of them swerved in, striking several other cyclists, who came down in a bunch. Wilmott, who was one of the scratch men. was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital with severe lacerations to his face and right ear, and concussion. Last evening Wilmott’s condition was reported to be sa tisTactory. Some of the riders involved in the accident received minor cuts, and some of the machines were damaged.

CAR AND TRUCK COLLIDE

GIRL FATALLY INJURED trass* .isocunoa TBuaaa.ii.) WANGANUI, October 15. Joan Elizabeth Oldfield, aged 18, a resident of Marton. was fatally injured last night when the motor-c-.r in which she was travelling as a passenger was struck by a motor-truck at the bottom of Wangaehu Hill. The truck was driven by a Maori, Murdock Rogan, aged 29, a labourer, and a resident of the Ratana pa. The accident occurred at 11.30 p.m. and the car was struck between the front and rear seats, a portion of the lorry striking Miss Oldfield, who was sitting in the rear seat, penetrating her side. On the arrival of the police apd Dr. Adams on the scene Miss Oldfield was dead.

The driver of the lorry was arrested and brought to Wanganui, where he was charged with negligent driving and causing death. He was remanded to Monday.

BOY DROWNED

DINGHY CAPSIZES IN LAKE ROTORUA CTBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND. October 18. Denver Peter McAdam, aged 16, a son of Mr and Mrs S. McAdam, of Rotorua, was drowned in Lake Rotorua this afternoon. The boy was one of three who were crossing the lake in a dinghy which capsized. The other two, Roy Matthews, aged 17, and Murray Matthews, aged 11, were both rescued. When about 100 yards from the shore the boys decided to change positions in the dinghy, but when they attempted to do so, the boat overturned and all three 'were thrown into the water. Calling for help, they struck out for the shore. Their cries were heard by golfers playing on the nearby government links. Two of the boys were assisted from the water: but McAdam had disappeared. A search Was fruitless. CYCLIST INJURED A cyclist, named Eric Henderson, aged 25. of 26 Mackenzie avenue, was injured when, he hit a stationary car in Ferry road, near Barbadoes street, at 10.50 p.m. on Saturday. He was taken to the Christchurch Hospital suffering from concussion. His condition last night was reported to be satisfactory.
