DISTRICTS
One of the most successful and enjoyable entertainments in the Lauriston district of the season was the ball held in the Lauriston Memorial Hall by the women’s committees of the Lauriston and Winchmore branches of the National Party. The funds of the National Party will benefit considerably as a result of the effort. A large and enthusiastic committee, with Mesdames Bland (Winchmore) and R. Bebbington (Lauriston) as joint presidents, and Misses G. Shearer (Winchmore) and E. Lemon (Lauriston) as joint secretaries, was m charge of the arrangements. , . , The hall was effectively decorated with coloured streamers and the windows were gay with tulips and poppies. Cook’s orchestra supplied the music, and extras were played by Mr J. Shearer (violin) and Mr J- E. Cretney. Messrs H. T. Crothers and J. Bland, jun were the masters of ceremonies. During the evening, the following contributed items: —Mr and Mrs AJister Oakley (duets), Mrs T. A. Robinson, Mrs Allister Oakley, Miss Shelagb Lambie, Miss Bemice Mr Stephen Curd and Mr Allister Oakley The accompanists were Mrs Oakley. Miss Dorothy Maidens, and Mr Philip Curd. Prizes for novelty dances were given by Mesdames J. Bland, C. Jones, and H. Dunlea, and were won by Mrs S. G Lemon and Mr J. Bland and Miss Dwyer and Mr G. Gimson. Mrs R. Bebbington, president of the Lauriston Women’s branch, thanked all who had helped to make the entertainment successful. Other speakers were Mr J. G. Marshall, chairman of the Lauriston b’-'.nch of the National Party, and Mr A A. McDonald (Ashburton), president of the Mid-Canter-bury executive. Among those present were Mr and Mrs R.
