Mrs Adam Hamilton, wife of the leader of the National Party, accompanied Mr Hamilton to Timaru yesterday, but did not go on with him to Wellington. When Mr Hamilton was welcomed at the Christchurch railway station by enthusiastic supporters, bouquets for Mrs Hamilton were presented on behalf of the Junior and Businesswomen’s Group of the National Party, and also by women supporters from the Avon electorate.

The Rev. W. C. McDouall, a missionary frotn China, will be the guest of Mr and Mrs A. E. Flower, College House, during the meeting of the Diocesan Synod next week. The Rev. G. B. Nanson (Cust) will stay with Mr T. Chapman, Fendalton, and Mrs Nanson at St. Faith’s House, Webb street.

Dr. and Mrs Mark Brown (Papanui road) returned yesterday from a short visit to Wanganui.

M- and Mrs L. W. Matson (Fendalton) are spending a holiday in Sydney and later will visit Melbourne.

Mrs Geoffrey Barnett (Dunedin) is the guest of Mrs A. T. C. Sellars, Fendalton.

Mrs T. Donaldson (Whangarei), who has been visiting the south, left Christchurch last night for Wellington.’ Mr and Mrs Jack Watts have returned from a holiday spent at Hanmer Springs, and have taken up residence at Clyde road, Fendalton.

Mrs A. E. Ellis and her young son are spending a holiday on the West Coast.

Miss D. Helem, who has been spending six months in Australia, returned home this week by the Awatea.

Lady Stewart and her two daughters (Pigeon Bay), who have been visiting England, are returning to New Zealand by the Rangitiki, which left London on Septembei 15. Mr and Mrs F. W. Bicknell (Cashmere Hills), who have been visiting England, are returning by the Rangitiki, due this month. Mrs G. R. Kingston (Timaru) has returned from a visit to Hanmer Springs. •Mis: Zara Zukeman, who was the guest of Mrs R. T. Turnbull (Beverley road), has returned to the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mrs A. E. Lawrence, who has been visiting Christchurch, has returned to her home at Timaru. Miss Allison Coote (Christchurch) has been visiting her parents at Pareora and is now spending a short holiday with Mr and Mrs J. Gilmore, Fairlie. Miss Nancy MacCormick, secretary of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union, and Mrs J. C. Findlay are Auckland visitors to New Plymouth for the Dominion golf championship tournament, which will begii to-morrow. Members of the committee of the Craighead Old Girls’ Association entertained Miss H. J. Clarke, the new headmistress of the Diocesan School, at the home of Miss Loo Cartwright. Those present included Mrs Ledingham, Mrs Geoffrey Rich, Mrs E. S. Elworthy, Misses Dorothy Raymond (president of the association), Margaret Macdonald, Loo Cartwright, Janet Murchison, Dorothy Cameron, and Gytha Anderson. Sir Robert Duncan Bell, K.C.5.1., formerly a member of the Executive Council of the Governor of Bombay, and acting-Governor of Bombay in 1936, is a passenger to New Zealand by the Rangitiki. which left London on September 15. When Sir* Robert joined the Indian Civil Service 36 years ago, he was for a time on special duty connected with the destruction of locusts. Captain H. M. Barnes, R.N., and Mrs Barnes, Mr and Mrs E. G. Norman, and Mrs C. Elgar are also amongst passengers by the Rangitiki. A very successful garden party was held at the home of Mrs C. R. N. Mackie, “Lavington,” North Linwood, president of the Linwood branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, in honour of the workers and sympathisers who generously helped at the recent district convention, sponsored by the Linwood union. The afternoon was spent amid pleasant surroundings. The district president, Mrs C. Barrel!, gave a helpful address and Mesdames Bielby, Madill, and Robinson gave elocutionary and musical items. The spring fair held by the Physical Mental Welfare Society of Christchurch, at the home .of the president, Mrs C. Coleridge Fair, Cashmere Hills, was an enjoyable and successful gathering, at which many attractive. Christmas goods found eager buyers. Mrs Farr has a further supply of gifts for disposal in aid of the society. Mr and Mrs J. O. Renaut, whose marriage took place recently in London, will make their home at Chorley, Lancashire, for the present, but Mr Renaut, who is on the staff of His Majesty's Office of Works, will probably be moved from one centre of activity to another. In due course he and his wife expect to return to New Zealand. Mrs Renaut, who was formerly Miss Aldwyth M. Jones, is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. L. Jones (St. Andrew's square). She went to England this year to further her studies and to gain experience in art designing. She immediately obtained a position as designer for a leading London firm of silk painters and decorators in the West End, and recently was interested to discover that one of her early designs, which had been accepted soon after her arrival, had been executed in several colour schemes and was being displayed in their showrooms. She hopes to carry or her designing as a free lance and to see more of her fabric pattern ideas on the London market.
