LABOUR PARTY CARNIVAL
RECORD ATTENDANCES AT OAMARU TUG-OF-WAR AND DANCING FINALS The finals of the tug-of-war competitions in the carnival arranged by the Oamaru branch of the Labour Party were contested in the Drill Hall on Saturday night, and attracted considerable public interest. The dancing competitions were also completed and other attractions were a variety ot stalls and side-shows. The gala, which lasted three days and nights, attracted record attendances. • The prizes were presented to the winners by the member for Oamaru (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) and the president of the local branch of the Labour Party (Mr T. Gill), who said that the results of the carnival had been gratifying to the organisers. The final of the heavy-weight tug-of-war contest was won by Glenavy Maoris (61st 121b) who beat Bram Lee, Timaru (59st 81b). The light-weight final was won by Carlton. Timaru (54st 81b), who beat Chittock's, Oamaru (53st 91b). The officials were Messrs Hoffman (judge) and R. Grimwood (timekeeper). The dancing results were as follows: —Highland Fling (under 8 years): May Galvin 1, M. Adamson 2, J. Begg 3- consolation (8 years and under): M. Adamson 1; Highland Fling (under 10 years): Helen Dalgety 1, T. Mills 2 M. Galvin 3; sword dance: H. Dalg'ety 1, T. Mills 2, J. Begg 3; Irish Jig: H. Dalgety 1, T. Mills 2, V. Smart 3; consolation: J. Begg 1, V. Smart 2; sailor's hornpipe (under 12 years): J. Smart 1, T. Mills 2, P. Low and H Dalgety (equal) 3; seann triubhais; J. Smart 1. H. Dalgety 2, T. Mills 3; Irish Jig: P. Low 1, H. Dalgety 2, J. Smart 3; Irish Jig (14 years and under): M. Robertson 1, R. Allington 2, J. Smart 3; sword dance: M. Robertson 1, P. Low 2, P. Allington 3; Irish reel: M. Robertson 1, D. Cayford 2, B. Allington 3; youngest competitor: Shirley McNeil.
FURTHER PLAYING AREA SUPPORT FOR COUNCIL PROPOSAL
NORTH OTAGO CRICKET ASSOCIATION
Support for the efforts being made by the Oamaru Borough Council to provide a further playing area in the town on the site of the Middle School, was given by members at the annual meeting of the North Otago Cricket Association last evening. The president (Mr M. S. Holmes) presided. On the motion of Mr W. Uttley, the following resolution was carried:— "That this association welcomes the indication that the Borough Council is at last taking an interest in the playing fields of Oamaru, and that it assures the Mayor (Mr L. J. K. Familton) that in his efforts to provide the community with a first-class playing ground in the heart of Oamaru, he has the full support of this association."
The Oamaru Club's proposal to enter two teams in the senior competition was discussed. A recommendation moved by Mr F. Jones, that permission be granted, will be placed before the executive committee. Protests agair '; the proposal were made by Mr J. Maddigan (Union) and Mr C. Davey (Albion), who said there would be too many byes in the season. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr F. Milner; president, Mr M. S. Holmes; vice-presi-dents, the Mayor, Mr H. S. Orbell, the Rev. Bro. Gettens, Messrs G. Todd, M. Tween; auditor, Mr J. G. McDonald; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. Jacobs; delegate to New Zealand Cricket Council, Mr V. Hamilton; trustees, Messrs M. S. Holmes, D. V. G. Smith.
Opening day was fixed for October 15, with competition entries closing en October 10. It was decided to recommend to the executive that three selectors be appointed.
RUGBY FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE OF NORTH OTAGO UNION The weekly meeting of the management committee of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr M. F. Woodward) presided.
The manager of the town team (Mr J. Palmer) on the TownCountry match last Saturday. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to the Country team on its win. The lateness of the Town-Country match in the season was criticised by members, it being said that it was a waste of time and money playing a match at such a late date.
After discussion, in which the smallness of local competition and the holding of a knock-out competition were referred to, it was agreed to consider the whole question of the rearrangement of next season's competitions at the committee's next meeting. Members of the North Otago representative team, R. Hammill, R. Hunt,
N. Low, and W. Watts, were granted representative* blazers for the season. A grant of £3 3s was made to the St. John Ambulance Association. Athletic was declared the winner of the Ralph Cup, and the meeting decided to send the club a letter of congratulation.
ARTS AND CRAFTS CIRCLE
The election of officers for the coming year .was held at the recent annual meeting of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the North Otago Women's Club. The annual report and balancesheet were adopted. Officers elected were as follows: Chairwoman, Mrs Qualter; committee, Mesdames M. Parker, D. McLeod, A. Robertson, V. Sutherland, and Misses D. Williams, Walter, and Thomson.
COLUMBA TENNIS CLUB A large gathering of members and visiting players was present at the official opening of the Columba Lawn Tennis Club for this season on Saturday afternoon. The courts were declared open by the Rev. "W. Lawson Marsh. The enthusiasm of the members and the excellent condition of the courts were favourable prospects for an enjoyable season, said the president (Mr B. B. Walton).
