CIVIL AIR GUARD

WOMAN COMMISSIONER APPOINTED

A MODERN HOME

England’s only woman Civil Air Guard Commissioner, whose appointment has just been announced, is Mrs F. G. Miles, daughter of the late Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson, and of Gertrude Elliott, the actress, who visited Australia some years ago. Mrs Miles is certainly a personality in the British air world. She may be called a pioneer woman pilot; in many ways she has done more for aviation than record breakers with famous names. As Britain’s only woman aircraft constructor, Mrs Miles has worked alongside her husband until the Miles’ machines have grown from beginnings which had a corner of a garage as their first factory, until now they have earned a £40,000 contract from the British Air Ministry. Mrs Miles is now definitely the most famous of the three Forbes-Robertson sisters. Blue-eyed, with classical features, a dress sense that makes her outstanding in any West End gathering, and a reputation for wit, she is also a very excellent housewife. Their ultra-modern house on the fringe of the Reading aerodrome is built in the shape of an aeroplane. It contains every modern gadget. From your bedside you telephone to the servants quarters for your breakfast. Her small son, Jeremy, has a tiny telephone, connecting his two nurseries and his nurse’s rooms, so that he and she can communicate without running up and down stairs.
