Sydnoy Smith (Waiteatea Valley) is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs Mackay (Albury). The sum of £79 was collected m Timaru on Friday for the Mary Raymond District Nurse Fund. Earlier donations amounting to £7l 13s, tne total raised was £l5O 13s, a smaller amount than was realised for the iuno Igcf vear Mrs R.' M. Smith (Wellington), secretary of the New Zealand Basketball Association, and Mrs H. D. Muir (Wellington). of the Dominion executive, arrived in Timaru on Saturday. They will remain in Timaru for the Dominion basketball tournament this week.

OBITUARY

MRS MARY MALLOY

Mrs Mary Malloy, a very old resident of Reefton, and one of the bestknown figures in the Inanaghua district. died at the home of her daughter in Wellington. Mrs Malloy lived in Reefton for 60 years. She was born 91 years ago in County Cork. Ireland, and arrived in Greymouth 70 years ago. Ten years later she and her husband settled in Reefton. where she lived until some months ago, when she went to Wellington. She is survived by four sons—Richard, Danifel, Patrick, all of Reefton, and James, of Sydney—and two daughters—Mrs Leahy and Mother St. Egbert, of the Mission Convent, Dannevirke.

The death occurred in the Westland Hospital. Hokitika, on Friday morning of Mrs Ann Isabella Malloch. wife of Mr Edward Thomson Malloch. of Rcvcll street, Hokitika. Mrs Malloch was G4 years old and was a native of Dunedin. For a number of years she lived in Timaru, and had been a resident of Westland for about 34 years. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Edward, of Wellington, and Frank, of Hokitika, and one daughter, Mrs J. Telfer, of Hokitika. Mr R. Griffiths, of Auckland, is a brother.

DE BUT ANTES* BALL •

The annual .debutantes’ ball of the Star Football ®Club was held in the Theatre Royal, Westport, last week, when the presentations were made to the Mayor and Mayoress. Mr and Mrs J. Kilkenny. Mrs Kilkenny wore a frock of gold crepe satin with emeraldgreen girdle. The matron-of-honour, Mrs I. Ryan, wore a frock of cyclamen satin with white coatee. Mrs T. M. Scanlon, as hostess, wore blue needlerun lace over clover-pink lining. Dressed in white frilled net frocks, Misses Marjorie McLachlan and Arlene Matthews were flower girls. The debutantes presented were Misses Patricia Ryan, who wore white net with lace flowers: Patricia Methven, white net and lace floral halo; Isabel Seymour, white georgette with floral lace trimmings; Bette Mara, cream net over white taffeta, with satin girdle; Daphne Phillips, silver sprayed net; Lilian Pascoe, net over silk taffeta with tiny ribbon bows on the skirt: Mary Hendrickson, white flounced spot net with ribbon trimmings; Maureen Hodgins, white lace with frilled net girdle; Alicia McMahon, satin and net with silver trimmings; Molly Curtis, pale pink net over satin; Bette Evans, white crepe satin relieved with silver; Betty Pountaine, white net over taffeta; Naomi Alford, net over satin with coatee and lace-trimmed silver Juliet cap.

HOCKEY CLUB’S BALL

At its first ball, which was thoroughly successful socially and financially, the Lakeside Women’s Hockey Club entertained many guests from other clubs. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers, balloons, and spring blossom. An energetic committee, of which Miss Joyce Brown was secretary, made excellent arrangements to ensure the enjoyment of the guests. Dance music was played by Lambie’s band, Mrs R. Lambie and Misses M. Nidd and Teihoka playing extras. Mr M. Alexander was master of ceremonies. An open Monte Carlo was won by Miss B. Habberjam and Mr R. Howson: an Ellesmere Sub-Association Monte Carlo by Mr R. Owens and partner. and a lucky spot by Miss Joan McLachlan and Mr Colin Lilley. In a cards tournament the successful players were Mesdames A. E. Brown and R. Titian and Messrs R. Thian and A. H. Duff. When presenting prizes won during the evening, Mr H. D. Marshall, president of the club, welcomed the visitors and thanked all who had helped to make the function successful Among the ladies present were Mesdames H. D. Marshall. A. E. Brown, J. GIFT PARTIES

A surprise party, organised by the fellow workers of Miss Hazel Button, in honour of her approaching marriage, visited the home of Mrs James Lester, the bride’s sister. Each guest brought a gift for the bride’s new home. The winners of games and competitions were Misses P. Hemmings, B. Thomas, and D. Roberts. Those present were Mesdames S. Button, V. Elliot, and J. Lester, Misses P. Hemmings, B. Thomas, Ivy Brown, Fanny Smith, Thelma Farrant, Doreen Roberts, Lorna Stewart, and Hazel Button.

Mrs J. Bott and Mrs R. Luke were hostesses at an afternoon party given in honour of Miss Hazel Button at the home of Mrs . Bott, Avonside. The guests each brought a gift suitable for the bathroom.
