FIFTY-FIRST REPORT

DORCAS SOCIETY

' The fifty-first annual report of the Oxford Terrace Dorcas .Society, presented at the annual meeting by the honorary secretary, Mrs Langran, reviews the activities of a successful year, during which the golden jubilee of the society was fittingly celebrated. The number of garments made and given away was 302, 167 of which were sent to Manurewa Children’s Home as an annual gift. Patchwork guilts, knitted garments, many of which had been made by a blind member, and parcels of material had also been distributed amongst the needy. Christmas cheer- had been provided for 11 families. At the request of the Sunlight League, pyjamas had been made for children going to health camps. Appreciation is expressed of the kindness of friends who regularly contributed gifts to the society, to the cutters and workers, to the society’s visitor, Mrs Syd Cox, and to the president, officers, and committee. The annual report of the mothers' meeting, . presented by Mrs V. Sim, said the work was, going on steadily. The membership was 73, with an average attendance of 45. Several social gatherings had been held , during the year, giving members an opportunity of getting to know each other better and of brightening their outlook on life. The thrift club and the library had made steady progress iduring the year. At the annual meeting, the Rev. L. A. North presided, and Mrs North- gave a description of her recent visit to Devon. The president, Mrs G. Riddell, expressed regret at the impending departure from Christchurch of Mr and Mrs North. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs G. Reddell; vice-presidents. Mrs E. A. Sheate and Mrs C; J. Jones; secretary, Mrs E. F. Langran: treasurer, Miss D. Ingold; visitor, Mrs Syd. Cox; cutters, Mesdames H. H. Holland, A. Hueston, P. Miles, and Miss E. Clark; committee, Medames W. I. Jones, M. E. B. Felton, A. Green, and Miss E. Gresham, Miss M. Sheate: leaders of mothers’ meeting, Mrs V. Sim and Mrs A E. Brown.

MISS EASTHER HONOURED

Members of the Anglican Ladies' Guild held an afternoon social in the Rotherham Hall, in honour of Miss Easther. who is leaving the district Mrs Roberts, who presided, in the absence of Mrs Jameson, spoke of the valuable assistance Miss Easther had been to the guild, of which she had been honorary secretary for the last seven years, and presented her with a clock in token of appreciation, from the guild members. Miss Easther gratefully acknowledged the gift. A competition was won by Mrs A. Robinson and afternoon tea was served.

The funeral of Mrs C. M. Burden, which took place at the Pleasant Valley churchyard to-day, was largely attended. The service at the church and graveside was conducted by Canon A. H. Norris. The pall-bearers were Messrs George Burdon, J. S.. Barker, Robin Harper, and H, Lapthorn. . Wreaths were sent by. relatives and many friends, and also by the vestry, Geraldine,-Geraldine Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Geraldine District Nurse Committee, Woodbury Basketball Club, Women’s Division Market Committee (Timaru), manager and staff Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness. Ltd. (Geraldine), Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd. (Geraldine).

BALL AT CUST

A successful ball, organised by the Women's Division of the Farmers Union, the Farmers’ Union, and the Young Farmers' Club, was held in the Public Hall, Gust, which was tastefully decorated with multi-coloured streamers, greenery, and soring blossom. A buffet supper was served In the Oddfellows’ Hall, where the tables were decorated with spring flowers. Members of the committee responsible for the successful gathering were Mesdames R. G. Wolff, Cecil Bennett, A. Ryde, Misses M. Mclntosh. J. Paterson and E. Beer, Messrs M. Spencer-Bower, J. Wolff, A. Gartery, C. Patient, E. Rands, and G. Young. Novelty dances were won by Miss Edna Pearce (Christchurch) and Mr E. Henderson and by Miss Brain and partner. Music for the dancing was played by Colin Campbell’s band (Christchurch) and extras by Mrs C. Mclntosh, Miss B. Evans, Messrs V. Henderson and P. Pachnatz. Messrs M. Spencer-Bower. G. Young, and. A.
