♦ ASHBURTON FESTIVAL “HIGH CLASS OF TALENT” The opinion that a very high, class of talent was being exhibited at the annual festival of the Ashburton Competitions Society this year was expressed by Mr H. E. Herring, M.P. (a patron of the society), who spoke at the evening session on Saturday evening. Mr Herring said that he had been particularly impressed by the desire for self-improvement shown by the young sompetltors. National song classes for ladies and gentlemen, and a vocal solo for school children attracted a good deal of attention at Saturday’s sessions. Three strong dancing classes, the Irish jig. under 12, with 31 entries, the sailor’s hornpipe, under 14, with 33 entries, and the tap or step dance for children 11 and under 14, wth 26 entries, were also completed. The dancing judge (Miss Margaret Kerr, M.R.A.D., of Granity) remarked that the last class was the best she bad seen during the competitions.
