DUNEDIN, 'August 26. There was again a small turnover on the Dunedin Stock Exchange this week! Generally, slight gains in prices were more numerous than losses. Commonwealth shares were firm,-and at the close price levels were above those at the end of last week. Taranaki Oilfields, which at cue stage had slipped back to buyers at lis 9d. made a good recovery. Most Government loans were inquired for, but sellers were not numerous. Sales of 3J per cent, stock, 1938-52, were recorded at £lOl and £IOO 17s 6d, and a parcel of 3i per cent, stock, 1939-43, changed hands at £IOO 2s 6d, Dunedin City 41 per cent, debentures, expiring April 1* 1942, were sold at £lO2 ss. No bank shares were sold. Chief interest was in Bank of New Zealands, but the £1 paid shares seldom rose, above £2 2s 6d. Although no sharp advances were recorded in front-rank Commonwealth industrials, a number of shares made up. some of their lost ground. Broken Hill Proprietaries, G. J. Coles, and Sydney Woolworths headed the improvements, the last-mentioned scrip moving up 9d to be sold at £1 Is 3d. Taranaki Oilfields took a sharp rise yesterday to finish with buyers at 12s 7d Holders, however, remained firm at 13s 6d. A brighter trend developed during the mid-week in the Australian mining section, and values showed a noticeable improvement at the close. Business was confined to sales of Broken Hill Souths, preferred Electrolytic Zincs, and Mount Morgans. There was also fairly good inquiry for Mount Lyells, which made up lost ground to the extent of Is. The quarterly dividend of 6d a share was reflected in the advance for North Broken Hills, but holders could not be drawn. Good support was accorded certain shares in the New Zealand mining section. Big Rivers, Gillespie's Beach and Nokomais being regularly in demand. The ■ first two mentioned shares were dealt in at fractionally firmer" prices, and a sale of Austral New Zealand Mining was recorded at last week's price. of £1 0s 3d.
