CHINESE WAIFS AND STRAYS

TO THE EDITOB OP THE FHEBS. Sir,—l hope you will grant me a space to reply to your correspondent "Awake" for the most ridiculous letter I bave ever read. "Awake" states that he wishes to warn generous people against introducing people of Eastern races into their homes. Perhaps time has changed now, but when I was at an English school in Christchurch I was taught that it was in God's Testament that we should help one another regardless of any difference in race or colour; but perhaps "Awake" has no Christian feeling in him, or else he would not write those words. Most people are afraid to know the truth but I think "Awake" should not 'say that the half-breeds have vices of both parents and virtues of none Why have they not? We are all born alike, but the truth is that there are too many persons like "Awake" who would look down at them, condemn them, laugh and sneer at them, and never give them a chance to show their virtues, just because they happen to be halfbreeds. Has "Awake" ever shown any kindness to halfbreeds? I am sure he has not. If he did I could guarantee he would receive boundless gratitude in return. "Awake" should think before he writes such nonsense as to allege that General Chiang Kai-Shek is a Bolshevik agent. Does he know that Generai Chiang Kai-shek has been fighting the Communists for the last 10 years? I should like "Awake" to say what he really means regarding the fate of the Red Cross funds for-China. - If he thinks that those funds are unwisely used, I can assure him and anybody else that the money has given life, hope, and good to many of the starving, innocent Chinese sufferers. "Awake" states, "But let it be to find homes for the waifs and strays in China." Now I wonder where in China now, can we find a home for those children that would offer protection for them from the cruel Japanese bombs. Chinese people will for ever thank our Britjsh friends who have given to our babies help and money, but we still need more and more money for there are many children yet still starving for food. In conclusion, I should like to quote from the Bible. Jesus said; "Suffer little children to come unto Me"—and I am sure He did not mention class, colour, or creed. —Yours, etc., CANTONESE.
