PARTY AT FAIRLIE

MRS J. R. LOUGHNAN HONOURED To give friends an opportunity to say good-bye to Mrs J. R. Loughnan, who will shortly leave Fairlie to live at Scargill, North Canterbury, an afternoon party was held at the home of Mrs W. A. B. Morton, Fairlie. A parting gift was presented to Mrs Loughnan with the good wishes of her friends. Those present were Mesdames J. R. Loughnan, N. Gillingham, sen., G. Lyons, S. K. . Gillingham, D. Jeune, J. A. Fraser, F. H, Thorpe, .A. R. Manchester, F. F, Neill, and W. A. B. Morton. STRATHEONA HOME TRAINING HOSTEL A meeting of the board of managers of Stratheona was held at Timaru, with Mrs A. H. Gillingham (chairwoman) presiding. Reference was made to the bereavement suffered by Mrs J. O. J. Oliyer and a motion of sympathy was carried in silence. The matron (Mrs F. E. Harper) reported on garden work and stated that Miss Mac Donald had given a talk on home-nursing, and Mrs Guild had taken Mrs Johnston to demonstrate spinning. The trainees had beeh greatly interested in Miss Mcßean’s physical culture class.-and were benefiting by the exercises. Ribbonwood trees had been planted on Arbor Day. Hot dinners for school children were still being prepared. Letters expressing appreciation of the effort being made to assist the domestic help problem and asking for further particulars were received from the Girls’ Vocational Guidance Office at Auckland, and from the Methven branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. It was reported that Miss Brown, Plunket Nurse at Temuka, had written explaining the series of infant welfare talks she will give the trainees. Donations received had included a book on physical culture from P. W. Hutton and Company, a Manual of Gardening in New Zealand from Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, and 50 day-old cockerels from Mr Hughes (Geraldine). TEACHER HONOURED GATHERING AT NEW BRIGHTON Many friends gathered at the New Brighton District High School to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs D. H. Kennedy, who will leave shortly for Otago, where Mr Kennedy has been appointed headmaster of the Karitane School. Mr Kennedy has been a member of the staff of the New Brighton School for 10 years, and Mrs Kennedy had also been a .member of the staff for a time. The headmaster (Mr F. W. Moore), referring to Mr Kennedy's sterling qualities, expressed the staff’s regret at his departure, and wished him success and happiness in his new position. Mr Kennedy was presented with a set of volumes from the staff, and later Jack Crew, head prefect of the school, asked him to accept an electric toaster from present and past pupils. 1 At the annual concert of the District High School, the chairman of the school committee (Dr. W. T. Glasgow) presented Mr Kennedy with a case of pipes from the committee. GIFT PARTY Miss Alice Templeton, whose marriage will take place to-morrow, was the guest of honour at an enjoyable picture party given by several friends. Each friend brought a gift for the pantry of Miss Templeton’s future home. Those present were Mesdames Brown, Strong, Templeton, Robb, Misses M. Bateman, N. Barton, H. Hern N. Jarman, E. Sluece, H. Hooper, J. Auton, M. Sutton, A. Nelson, N. Geoghan, R. Bailey, U. Templeton, M. Smith, and D. Good. Misses U. Templeton, O. Metcalfe, and N. French, who will be Miss Templeton’s bridesmaids, were hostesses at a “kitchen” gift party held at the home of Miss Templeton’s parents at Spreydon. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs S. G. FORESTERS* BALL The Memorial Hall at Papanux was gaily decorated when members of the Foresters’ Lodge held their annual Ball. Many guests danced to the music of Colin Campbell’s orchestra and extras were played by Miss Hinchy and Mr E. GSaridge.
