COLONEL E. R. SMITH HONOURED
♦ BIRTHDAY PARADE BY OTAGO REGIMENT (FBESS *SSOCI*nOK TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, July 26. An unusual compliment was paid to Colonel E. R. Smith this morning when, upon the attainment oi his eighty-third birthday, the officers of 'the Otago Regiment, his former command, and members of the trumpet and bugle band paraded in front of his residence, sounding “Reveille” and the General Salute Later Colonel Smith entertained them. , _ Colonel Smith has had 55 years of volunteer service. He volunteered for service in both the Beer and Great Wars, but on both occasions was retained for home duty..,* As a rifle shot Colonel Smith won the New Zealand championship in 1894. It is recorded that when he was seventy-eight years of age he was competing at the Trentham meeting, and scored six successive bulls in 10 shots at 1000 yards. Colonel Smith has been chairman of the Dunedin Stock Exchange for several terms.
