ATTEMPT TO KIDNAP LORD NUFFIELD

# THORNTON CHARGED WITH INCITING CONSPIRACY LONDON, July 19. The trial has opened at the Birmingham Assizes of John Bruce Thornton, who is charged with inciting Arthur Geoffrey Ramsden to conspire with him to kidnap Lord Nuffield, and inciting Ramsden to sault and falsely imprison Lord ruffield,- and inciting Ramsden to compel Lord Nuffield to execute a letter of credit by restraining his person with intent to defraud Lord Nuffield. Thornton pleaded not guilty. The prosecution again outlined the alleged plan to kidnap Lord Nuffield and hold him for £IOO,OOO ransom. Ramsden said in evidence that he did his utmost to put Thornton off the plan. "I told him I considered that the scheme was impossible, and when he chartered the yacht, I thought it was time +o go to Scotland Yard. I Thornton was going to commit the crime, and I could not see any way of stopping it." The case was adjourned.
