DUKE OF GLOUCESTER BUYS CASTLE
♦ -. ORIGINAL BUILT IN TWELFTH CENTURY LONDON, July 19. The Duke of Gloucester has purchased the old Tudor castle at Barnwell St. Andrews,' Northants. The castle was recently modernised and a swimming pool has been installed. Barnwell Castle, which is just outside the village, was once the seat of Sir Edward Montague, one of the Duchess's ancestors, who bought it, with all the titles that went with it. The former owner of the castle, Major Colin Cooper, a 45-year-old businessman, died suddenly in Kenya in March. > In the garden of the castle stand the ivy-mantled ruins of the original fortress, built by Berengarius le Moyne in 1264. By the brook which runs nearby are earthworks of a still earlier building. The first Barnwell Castle was built in 1152.
