ASSOCIATION CODE

SCHOOL TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA

OTAGO ASSOCIATION’S CRITICISM (FBES3 ASSOCIATION. TILBGBAM.) DUNEDIN, July 5. At a meeting of the management committee of the Otago Football Association a resolution was carried: “That, in view of the report that the New Zealand Football Association has voted £ 150 for the purpose of sending a secondary schools team to Australia, this association believes that a regular scheme of interprovincial matches on the lines of the Plunket Shield with the English Trophy at -ake would be better in the interests of Association football in New Zealand, and that the proposed sum of £l5O should be used for this purpose.”

PROPOSAL WELL RECEIVED IN AUSTRALIA , (FBESS ASSOCIATION TEUEGHAM.) WELLINGTON, July 5. An assurance that Australia was very much interested in the proposed visit of, a New Zealand secondary schools' team. to Australia in the August term holidays was contained in a letter from the Aus-: tralian Soccer Football Association, read at to-day's meeting of the council of, the New Zealand Football Association. It was understood that the letter stated New Zealand would be responsible for all expenses to. and from Australia, and that Australia be asked to arrange the itinerary, billet the boys, secure accommodation for two managers, and pay all expenses in Australia. For the team to arrive in Sydney on August 23 and leave on September 12 appeared to be a short stay. It was considered that it would be asking too much to include Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, the letter continued. A better suggestion would be to confine the tour to New South Wales and Queensland, but if possible, to extend the itinerary to Include Adelaide and Melbourne. In the meantime Australia would be concentrating on a tour of New South Wales and Victoria or preferably New South Wales and Queensland. The chairman (Mr J. Melburn) and other members expressed gratitude for Australia’s cordial reception of the proposal. It was decided to reply by cablegram expressing preference for a tour of New South Wales and Queensland, and informing Australia that the age limit would be 16 in January, 1938. Notification was received of the withdrawal of Millerton from the Chatham Cup. The council approved Monday, August, 8, at Christchurch, as the date for the Wellington challenge to Canterbury for the Football Association Trophy; A challenge for the trophy was also received from Auckland.

ANOTHER ENGLISH TOUR

SOUGHT

PROPOSAL FOR CENTENNIAL A suggestion that an English Association football team should jfbnr New Zealand during the Centennial oddHaf tions in 1940 has been communicated by the New Zealand Football Association to the English Football Association. A copy of the letter sent to England was received last evening by the management committee of the Canterbury Association. The last English tour of New Zealand was a "cpstly venture” to the New Zealand Association, the letter states, after explaining that the association's financial position unfortunately does not allow it to contribute to the cost of ocean travel. It is considered that, in view of the exceptionally strong financial position of the English body; and the increasing interest ini the.game In New Zealand, the English Association “should give serious consideration to assisting the game generally in the Dominion.” “As a result of the visit of the amateur team -last year there is already definite progress and greater interest in the game in this-country.” the letter states. “In the schools, both primary and secondary, this interest is very manifest. * and in order to maintain the increased interest it is imperative that we should have visits from overseas teams at intervals of not less than three or four years. In view of this, and of 1940 being-the centennial year in New Zealand, my council would appreciate another visit .by a team from: England/' The state of Association football in* India is also being inquired into by theNew Zealand Football Association- The Canterbury executive received a circular' from the New Zealand council, stating, that the chairman had been in touch wtthl' representatives of the Indian hockey team, to obtain information about the ‘.‘playing capabilities” of those playing, the game in India.-
