UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT CANTERBURY TEAMS BEATEN AT DUNEDIN (rBESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAU.) DUNEDIN, July 4. The New Zealand University hockey tournament began this afternoon on a wet, muddy ground and in _ wet weather. Results:— Men —Auckland 5, Otago B 0; Otago A 4, Canterbury 0; Victoria 8, Massey 3. Women—Otago 8, Canterbury 3: Auckland 6, Victoria 1. The match between Otago University A and Canterbury University College was fast and willing, and Otago did not have matters as much its own way as the score would indicate. Moore played a good game for Otago, kicking clear time and again when Canterbury came into the circle. B. Ryeburn and Alldred were outstanding in Otago’s forward line, Ryeburn scoring three goals and Alldred one. Canterbury did not have a particularly strong team, though the forwards were fast. Buchanan, right half, and Walter, centre half, were the best players of the side, though Louisson and Denham were also well to the fore. Some good hockey was seen in both women’s games, though most interest centred 'in that between Canterbury and Otago, which was won by Otago by eight goals to three. The forward line displayed excellent combination, Misses N. Stewart N. Cannon being the outstanding players. Misses Alison Marshall and B. Andrews were very solid in the full-back positions. Miss' E. Marshall scored two goals. Miss N. Stewart three. Miss N. Cannon two, and Miss Ada Marshall one. Miss C. Aldridge scored two of Canterbury’s goals, and Miss Z. Aldridge the third.

The present tour docs not include a match at Kalgoorlie. The Rotorua Hockey Association wrote asking for a match against the Prince’s team, and the matter was held over till later in the itinerary. July 16 was the date set down for the Auckland v. Poverty Bay shield match at Auckland. , - On the application of the Wanganui Technical College, it was decided to approve of the holding of a secondary schools’ hockey tournament at Wanganui from August 23. The secondary schools’ tournament is held for the Allan Ranking Memorial Cup, which was supplied by the old boys of the Addington Hockey Club in memory of one of the members of the club.

In reply to the Auckland Hockey Association’s request for permission to hold a hockey tournament in 1940 in connexion with the centenary celebrations it was decided to ask for further information on the proposal.
