SOUTHERN ROUTE TO AUSTRALIA
CONTINUATION UNDER SUBSIDY URGED (KIBM associatioh imasiKj INVERCARGILL, June 24. The need for the continuation of the passenger shipping service between Melbourne and Southland for a full year was urged at a conference of Southland local body representatives and Southland members of Parliament this afternoon. It was stated that a subsidy would be necessary, and the proposal was made that the harbour boards should contribute to the _ cost if the Government would validate such expenditure. Mr W. A. Ott, chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board, said that there was a big demand from all parts of the South Island and Wellington for the continuation and extension of the service. A subsidy of from £40.000 to £50.000 a year might be required at first. T 1 ' Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) said that the suggestion that the harbour boards should contribute was excellent. The Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C., and Mr W. M. C. Denham both promised support to the proposal.
