WAGES AND SALARIES IN N.Z.
SPEECH BY DELEGATE AT GENEVA “PEOPLE ARE BETTER OFF THAN EVER” LONDON, June 21. Under the first head-line “Dominion Proves Forty-Hour Case,” the “Daily Herald” gives prominence to a report from Geneva of a speech by Mr J. Thorn, the New Zealand M.P., at the Internationa! Labour Conference, in which he quoted statistics indicating the increases in workers and production in 1935-37. Mr Thorn admitted that the cost of living had increased by 14§ per cent., but he said that one third was caused by external conditions. In the same period wages and salaries had increased by an aggregate of 42 per cent. “The fact is that the masses of the people are better off than ever. Moreover, .the employers are far from ruined. Their profits have improved substantially.”
