PRODUCTS OF COAL TAB

“A RAPIDLY GROWING INDUSTRY” ADDRESS AT RANGIORA BY DR. R. O. PAGE Developments in the production of dyes and other chemical compounds from coal tar were outlined in an ad* dress to the Rangiora class of the Workers’ Educational Association by Dr. R. O. Page, who explained that the annual consumption of coal for all purposes had reached the enormous total of several thousand million tons a year. Most of this was used in the production of coke for the steel mpage he considered that in the future coal would be used more as a chemical than as a source of power. Coal would be too valuable to burn in the domestic grate a*.d would be replaced by coke for this purpose. ... .. , , Coal tar obtained from the destructive distillation of coal in the modern gas works retort provided the raw material for rapidly growing industry. From this common substance, by a process of fractional distillation, motor fuel, high explosives, disinfectants, medicines, wood preservatives, insecticides, and a valuable series of dyes, could be obtained. A ton of coal could produce about 1201b of tar, from which about 50 per cent, was extracted ' > provide some of the substances mentioned, the residue being pitch, which was useful as a road material. Dr. Page concluded by giving a brief history of the production of natural dyes and their gradual replacement by the cheaper and more effective substitute.
