FAIRLIE WATER SUPPLY

_♦ REQUEST FOR INCREASE IN SUBSIDY On the recent visit of the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) to Fairlie a very favourable hearing was given to a request for an increase in the subsidy on the proposed high • -essure water supply and drainage scheme. The Minister undertook to ask the Minister for Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) if the employment subsidy could be increased from the £3 a week offered to £4. Mr Davison, chairman of the Mackenzie County Council, said that £3 a week had been offered as a subsidy for unemployed men engaged on the work. It was estimated that the work would employ 50 men for 40 weeks. If an increase was granted there would be a greater chance of the scheme passing a poll of ratepayers.
