AID FOR SPANISH ORPHANS

APPEAL BY MAYOR OF WELLINGTON EFFORT TO RAISE £IO,OOO IN NEW ZEALAND {PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, June 23. An appeal for the support of relief funds for homeless Spanish orphans was issued to-day by the Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hisiop), who said that of 500,000 homeless people in Spain, no fewer than 53,000 were orphaned children, and their ranks were being added to at the rate of 70 a day. “It is the intention that as much as is practicable of the money raised will be spent in New Zealand on New Zea-land-made clothes and foods,” he said. “We will seek from the Red Cross now actively engaged in relief work in Spain, advice as to the kind and quality of goods required. It must not be forgotten that when this fund is closed the winter will be fast approaching in Spain, and every gift, even the smallest, may prove the means of saving some small child from death by starvation or exposure. “The trustees of the fund to be raised are Mr Claude Weston, K.C., D.5.0., and Mr W. P. Rollings, LL.B. The fund will be administered by the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, who will co-operate with relief organisations in Spain in the distribution of money and goods, “It must be clearly understood that this appeal is non-partisan and non-religious. It is to aid children of any and every political cause and creed,’’ he added. It is hoped to. raise £IO,OOO in New Zealand. The New Zealand Government has put at the High Commissioner’s disposal £2OOO for the relief of destitute orphaned Spanish children, irrespective of'the political beliefs their parents may have held.
