DEVELOPMENT OF MACHINES

ADDRESS BY MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS The Hon. R. Semple, Minister for Public Works, addressed a large gathering of supporters in Temuka last evening, and showed films demonstrating the development of machines in public works. The Public Works Department, he said, was the manufacturning, repairing, and maintenance shop of the nation It was one of the main springs. The increased use of motor-cars was a pretty good indication that the Government was not going down-hill, he said. Soon there would be as many motor-cars as there were wheel-bar-rows before he came on the scene. Emphasising the value of the humanity factor in the economical equation, Mr Semple remarked that some people had been looking at things in terms of money so long that their eyes had “turned to the shape of a twoshilling piece.” Humanity could not be measured as the grocer measured sixpenny-worth of sugar or a pound of salt. The saving of humanity that had come about through the Government’s improve dtransport regulations was tremendous.
