SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mr and Mrs M. J. Lynskey have left to spend the winter, months in North Auckland. : Mr Owen Clissold, who has been appointed manager of the South British Insurance Company,; in Timaru, and and Mrs Clissold, ibave arrived from Wellington and aifi staying at the Grosverior Hotel.

Miss Tate and her sister, Mrs Deutere (Wellington) have been on a visit to Miss Strachan (“Rosebank,” Albert street). Miss H. C. Strachan is visiting friends in the south.

Mrs E. Vincent (Kingsdown), who has been visiting Australia and the North Island, has returned home. Mr and Mrs H. Menzies (Decanter Bay, Banks Peninsula) spent the weekend with Mrs P. A. Elworthy, Gordon’s Valley.

BALL AT PAREORA

Although dancers were obliged to dance In comparative darkness owing to a power failure during the earlier part of the evening, the thirty-second annual ball given by the residents of Pareora proved the most successful function held in Pareora this- year. Multi-coloured streamers lent a gay appearance to the hall. The music was supplied by a Timaru orchestra, assisted with extras by Miss Mina Coote and Mr N. Elmes. Mr W. Andrews (Timaru) was master of ceremonies. Prizes for the Monte Carlo waltz were won by Mr and Mrs C. H. Beck, and the lucky-spot by Mr B. - Brian and partner. During the evening several songs were sung by Miss Lorraine Mulligan. The committee in charge of the arrangements for the function were Mr J. Mclntyre (chairman), Mrs H. Cornelius (secretary), Mr and Mrs Coote, Mr and Mrs L. G. Howard, Mr and Mrs H. Weenink, Mr and Mrs J. Topp, sen., Mr and Mrs A. Hastie, Mr and Mrs A. McGregor, Mr and Mrs E. Longman, Mr and Mrs G. Smith. My and Mrs C. Beck, Mr and Mrs R. W. Munro, Mrs Mclntyre, and‘Mr H. Cornelius.

The grand march was led by the chairman, Mr J. Mclntyre, and Mrs Cornelius. Supporters of the ball were Mr and Mrs J. Day, Mr and Mrs' S. Winchester, Mr and Mrs D. Craig, Mr and Mrs N. CARD PARTY

An enjoyable card party was held recently at “St. Leonard’s,” the home of Mr and Mrs G. K. McLaughlin. The prizes, given by Mrs J. P. Rivers, were won by Miss Frances McLaughlin and Mr G. T. Cochrane. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mr and Mrs L. Johns. Items were given by Mesdames Cockrane and McLaughlin and Messrs J. P. Rivers and A. Baker.
