BIRDLINGS FLAT-LITTLE RIVER HOAD
TO TBS XBXTOK 0» THX FXXM. S*r,—l do not think I shall be accused of exaggeration if I say that the Birdlings Flat-Little River road is not very good just at present. Provided you know exactly where to go, and do not go too fast, there is no difficulty in getting through. We went over this road and back again to-day in a small car about the time 'that Mr Semple went through to Akaroa. There are several very dangerous places where one might easily get into quite deep water. One car was stuck on the road or just off it all last night. This state of affairs is likely to recur any time, and might result in a serious accident, and as there is little chance of the permanent outlet for Lake Forsvth being made in the near future, I should like to suggest that the road be properly staked in the low-lying parts with the depth being shown on white stakes on each side of the road. Any driver can then tell not only the road but which is the safer side to take, as he will see at a glance the exact depth of water on each side of the road. Where scouring is apt to occur, a special notice should be put up to that effect. At present there are a few sticks, which help to keep one from getting into the ditch on one side.—Yours, etc., PATIENT SUFFERER. Little River, June 16, 1938.
