APPEASEMENT

TO THB GOITOB OB 188 t-BEBB. Sir,—On reading the latest files of English papers I find the word “appeasement” very much in evidence. British Ministers and ambassadors are speaking gently to dictators, and we hope that presently some good results may appear. it has occurred to me that perhaps the' - same methods might be used here. The women of this district have been exceedingly bus. r of late, giving tea and supper parties and listening to words of wisdom from various National Party leaders. Now we hear that the Minister ±or Public Works is to address a meeting in Geraldine. . I think it would be a graceful act of appeasement to ask him to attend one of our tea parties. He would then see that our cups and saucers are quite clean, and that there is no djrt on our sandwiches and cakes, and the Savage breast ofv Mr Semple might be soothed. Also we could tell him that we are in no need of irrigation works, as we have had the wettest autumn on record, and have lately had three more inches of rain, so. that he could move his irrigation camps to soma drier locality; and then the Geraldine women would also be appeased.—Yours, etc., ANCIENT 'DAME.
