DOG TRIALS

FINAL CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT CANTERBURY MEETING AT WAIMATE [THE PRESS Special Service.] WAIMATE. June 16. The huntaway with slew, the third and last championship event at the Canterbury Collie Dog Clubs’ Association sheep dog trials, being held with the Waimate Sheep Dog Trial Club’s jubilee meeting, was decided to-day. There was fine weather. The trials are being held on Mr E. C. Studholme's property, Te Waimate. The event was held in conjunction with the Waimate open and maiden, with a total entry of 60 dogs. A heavy frost made the ground difficult to work on in the morning, but most of the dogs event completed in good time. It was not a difficult course, but it was excellent to trv out the dogs for the championship. Second in the championship was y. Rosss Don Minor. 107 i points, 4] points behind the winner. R. M. Wilson s Jock was third with 103] points. ‘ _ The maiden event was won by T. McGimpsey’s Toy, with 50 points, J. Martins Watch, with 49] points was second, and S. Garland's Roy, 43] points, third.

Garland’s Roy • • 43] 3 In the championship run, Callaghan s Ben Romp started quietly, hunted in good style through the first posts, and made a good line to the second posts. He went through the second posts and took the slew well. He was a little too far off the sheep when he finished. He completed in smin 9sec. . , „ Ross's Don Minor hunted through the first poles in good line up to the second poles. He went slightly against the command In the second poles and let the sheep rather low before the top poles. He completed in Bmin 33sec. Wilson’s Jock took the sheep away quietly, holding in a good line through the first and second poles. He took the slew well and followed in good style, but missed the top poles. Matheson’s Daniel allowed the sheep to drift slightly before the first poles and the sheep broke before the second flags, but he recovered well. He had'trouble in getting the sheep to go through the second flags, and* allowed the sheep to go below the top flags before bringing back, and completing in Bmin 25sec. Lan Anderson's Dick allowed the sheep to drift slightly before the first poles. He was slightly out of position twice before the approach to the second poles. He slewed well, but was too far off the sheep before completing. The judge (Mr J. Davidson) said that the first six dogs in the open event made very good runs. Some of them did no't run so well in the championship run. The work on the whole in the class was really outstanding. He had never seen better hunting work than he had seen today and yesterday afternoon. Commenting on the work in all the championship events he said it had been exceptionally good The last of the local events started today and will be concluded to-morrow morning.
