ANNUAL BALL

KEMPTHORNE* PROSSER AND COMPANY STAFF ENTERTAINS The annual ball held by the staff of Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser and Company’s New Zealand Drug Company, Ltd., is always most enjoyable, for'the staffs of all departments co-operate in an effort to make it a memorable occasion for those who attend. This ball, held last night at the Winter Garden, had been organised by Misses Lilian Brocket, Kura_ Wilkinson, Vera Evans, Messrs E. Davis, G, Gregory, M. Sharman, and R. Clandge (honorary secretary). - . ; As their honoured guests staff members had invited Mr and Mrs W. B. Price, Mr H. C. East, and Mr S. P. Cameron (Dunedin). ’ , , Mrs Price wore a frock of black selfpatterned crepe, the cowled bodice being trimmed with narrow white braid in vertical striped effect and red buttons. Her corsage spray was of pink abutilons. Miss Brocket’s frock ot ivory Ottoman silk was patterned in red, yellow, blue, and green in small floral design, with large red flowers on the bodice: Miss Kura Wilkinson wore a midnight blue frock of waffle taffeta, with a shoulder spray of abutilons and spring flowers; black velvet flowers trimmed the neck-line of Miss Evans’s frock of tamarisk pink cloque, and a plaited girdle combined the two colours. A song and dance by Mr T. McGregor added interest to the evening’s Erogramme, and music was supplied y the Bailey-Marston orchestra. Amongst those present were Mesdames M. Foskett, Sydney Hunt, C. Page, Kathleen Sandes, Marie Rhodes, and Betty Leonard. WEDDING LONGSTAFFE—KISSEL St. Teresa’s Church, Riccarton, was decorated with bronze chrysanthemums for the wedding of Margaret (Peggy) Kissel, only daughter of Mr and Mrs H. B. Kissel, Templeton, to James William Longstaffe, second son of Mr and Mrs G. R. Longstaffe, Prebbleton. The Rev. Father Seward performed the ceremony and Miss Lynsky was organist. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a lace' frock over satin, made in simple lines with V neckline. Her veil of cut tulle, arranged from a circlet of silver and lily-of-the-valley; formed a brain, and she carried.a bouquet of lilies and pink carnations. Miss' Molly Buckley, cousin of the bride, as bridesmaid, wore a clover pink taffeta frock with net overdress in redingote style, with deep sash relieved with silver. Her posy was of fuchsias and : hothouse flowers. Mr H. Kissel was best man. The guests were ; received at the Winter Garden by the bride’s and bridegroom’s parents. The : bride’s mother wore a green silk dress and yelour hat to .tone, . The bridegroom’s mother wore a black dress with touches of henna and a black hat. The bride travelled in a rust suit with smart green - coat and bat : and accessories to tone. Mr and Mrs Longstaffe will make their home in Taradale, near Napier. J. Richards, and items were given by Misses P- and V. Simpson and V. Joy. ' , . The fancy costumes were judged by Mesdames E. J. Corcoran and R. C. Stewart, and awards were made as follows: —Most original costumes, Pat Simpson and V. Williams; prettiest frock, Betty Eustace; best-dressed girl, Jane Aiken; best-dressed boy, Ivan Shaw; best pair. J. Jury and R. Little; special prize, E. Gray; mother with most children in fancy dress, Mrs A. Eustace.

CROQUET CLUB

PRESENTATION OP PRIZES The New Brighton Croquet Club closed its season in May, > but the prizes for the year were not presented until recently, when the members held an evening party at the home of Mrs W. Barnett The president, Mrs A. Dey. welcomed the Mayor. Mr E. L. Smith, and Miss Smith. Flag 500 was played during the evening, and after supper the Mayor presented the prizes as follows* —Club championship, Mr H. Ragg; junior championship, Mrs R. Sutton; C grade, Mrs Oldridge; best first year player. Mrs Turner; Junior silver button, Mrs Mitchell; doubles silver mallets, Mrs Mitchell and Mr H. Ragg. Winners of the 500 were Mesdames *
