FRIDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) REMANDED Anselm Hein (Mr D. W. Russell) was remanded till June 10 on a charge of deserting from a foreign ship, the Naumberg, at Dunedin. BREACH OF PROBATION Charles Frederick Pryke was charged with failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. Mr W-. H. Darby, Probation Officer, said that Pryke had appeared on four charges of failing to account for sums totalling £2O 18s 9d, in December, 1935. He had been admitted to probation on condition that he made repayment. but no money had been repaid. Pryke* had been on sustenance and had had a little work at Lyttelton. He had also done some gold prospecting and had worked on the Buller railway. The order for repayment was cancelled. TRAFFIC OFFENCES Offenders against traffic regulations were fined and ordered to pay costs or otherwise dealt with as follows: Careless driving: Nellie Adelaide Appleby, £2; John Edison Eaton, £2; Jude Lenton Fleming, £2; Harry Snelson, £3; William Charles Scott, £2. AKAROA (Before Mr H. A. Young. S.M.) A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Akaroa on Thursday, before Mr H. A. Young. S.M. Judgment by default for the plaintiff was given for R. S. C. Stewart against Mary Smith, for £7 12s lOd and costs. LICENSING OFFENCES For being on licensed premises after hours, A. F. M. Wright was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs, T. H. Sunckell was fined 30s and ordered to pay costs, and V. Sunckell was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. BREACH OF FISHERIES ACT T. G. Phillips was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs for using a drag net having a bunt of two and threequarter inch mesh for taking of flounders, the mesh being under the four-inch minmimum provided by regulation 61 of the Fisheries Act, 1908. Constable C. Dalbeth gave evidence that Phillips had been previously warned not to use the net for flounders and that he and Inspector Drake had found him using it and had confiscated the net on April 13. Defendant pleaded guilty to the charge, and stated he had used the net for 30 years. MOTORIST FINED James H. Hammond, who did not appear, but wrote pleading not guilty, was convicted and ordered to pay costs for driving a motor-car without due care and attention. On a charge of exceeding • the speed limit of 30 miles an hour in Akaroa Borough, he was convicted and fined £7 and costs £1 14s - * Lance Le Lievre gave evidence that the defendant had killed his dog on the Esplanade, and that he was travelling at 40 miles an hour, and did not. stop when he killed the dog. Constable Dalbeth said he had interviewed defendant the same afternoon and he had refused to compromise with Le Lievre regarding the death of the dog.
