I —— \ INTEREST SHOWN AT WESTPORT I At a meeting of members of the ' Westport Debating Club, with Mr G. G. M. Mitchell presiding, it was decided to put the club on a proper basis and the following resolution was carried: "That a club .be formed, to be called the Westport Literary and Debating Club.” The election of officers will take place at the next meeting. Mr Mitchell gave an interesting talk on debating. Messrs C. M. Robertson, ,W. Sher- [ lock L. O’Neill. F. Woodward, A. Met--1 son, and Sawtill gave informative j speeches. Mr Mitchell gave constructive criticism bn the speeches, awarding the honours to Mr Sawtill. Messrs L. O’Neill. T. Shaw, H. Maitland, A. Metson (affirmative), C. M. Robertson, W. P. Jackson. F. Woodward, and Sawtill (negative) were selected to debate on June 9, the subject being. "That the iron and steel works should be erected at Westi port.” WESTPORT ESPLANADE GRANT FOR CLEANING UP WORK The Westport esplanade, a river bank : promenade running from the Buller 1 bridge to the merchandise wharf, after years of neglect, is to be cleared and beautified under a Government grant. 5 The Buller Progress League received ’ advice from” the Hon. P. C. Webb (member for Buller) that the Minis--3 ter for Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone) was prepared to consider favourably 5 a request from the Marine Department for a grant towards labour costs. The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C., sent a ; telegram to Mr C. F. Schadick advis- \ ing that authority had been given to i proceed with -the work of clearing the - Esplanade and the work will be con- ; ducted by the Westport Borough CounI cil under the control of the Labour j Department.
