HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

COST OF IMPROVEMENTS TO AIRPORT The first meeting of the newlyelected Mayor and council of the Hokitika Borough was held on Thursday evening. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs. Henry Elcock, Parry, Fox, Turner, Freitas, Caliari, Stopforth, and H. L. Michel. The Mayor referred to the death of Mr Eric L. Park, a former councillor, and moved that the council convey to Mrs Park and members of the family the deep sympathy of the council in their bereavement. The motion was carried in silence, members standing. It was agreed to reduce the quprum of the library committee from six to four. The Westland County Council advised that the cost incurred in cutting down trees to secure the safety of machines landing at the aerodrome had been apportioned as follows; — Westland County Council £45, Hokitika Borough Council £45, Hokitika Aero Club £5 2s; total £95 2s. The Hokitika Fire Board advised that the council’s contribution for the year commencing April 1, 1938, was £283 10s. . The Westland Hospital Board forwarded copies of estimates , for 193839. It advised that the Hokitika Borough Council’s contribution was £1751 3s 6d, as against £1320 for the previous year. The manager of the abattoir reported that the following animals were slaughtered during April:—4s cows, 39 heifers, 61 bullocks, 284 sheep, 139, lambs, nine pigs, seven calves: condemned. 3 cows. Fees for the month were £B7 11s 6d (last year £93 19s). Cr. Elcock was unanimously apappointed Deputy-Mayor. It was resolved to renew an appli- . cation to the Valuation Department for a new valuation of the borough. MAGISTRATE’S COURT SESSION AT HOKITIKA Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court at Hokitika on Friday morning. Three offenders found on the licensed .premises, of the , Clydesdale Hotel. Ross, after hours were- each convicted and fined 5s and were ordered to pay costs. , „ Vincent Robert Stopforth and Frank Stewart were each convicted and fined 10s‘ for cycling after dark without a light. Ronald Walter Scott pleaded guilty to a charge of being a person other than the licensee of the licensed premises of the Clydesdale Hotel, Ross, supplied liquor to persons not lawfully entitled to be supplied. He was convicted and fined £1 with costs. On a similar charge Gilbert Louden was fined £1 with costs. Frederick James Poole, licensee of the Clydesdale Hotel. Ross, pleaded guilty to a charge of selling liquor after hours and was -convicted and fined £2 with costs. . A charge against Robert Baird of failing to keep as close as was practicable to the left of the roadway when driving a' motor-car on the highway between Kanieri and Hokitika on December 24. 1937, was dismissed. A fine of £3 with costs was imposed on Alan Mervyn Overton on a charge of negligently driving a motor, vehicle along the Kanieri-Hokitika main highway on April 15. OBITUARY MR H. E. DEBENHAM The death has occurred at Cobden of Mr Henry Edward Debenham, aged 84 years, a native of London, who came to New Zealand as a child. He resided in Hokitika and later took up farming at Jackson’s, latterly residing at Cobden. GREYMOUTH PERSONALS Mr Justice Northcroft will arrive from Christchurch to-day. to preside over Supreme Court sittings at Greymouth. Mr and Mrs W. J. Smith (Timaru) are visiting Mr and Mrs Errol Smith, Milton road. Mr P. Beck left on Saturday for Wellington. WESTPORT Miss M. Mullan (Westport) left on Saturday morning to resume her studies at Canterbury College. Mrs C. T. Beswick and daughters (Auckland) ■■ i visiting Mr and Mrs W. Martin, : (Cap' Line).
