TROTTING RACES AT ADDINGTON

WARM COATS AND SMALL HATS

The weather was fine but cold for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting held at Addington on Saturday. There was a good attendance, men predominating in the large crowd that enjoyed the interesting programme of events. Warm coats, of fur or tweed, and small hats were worn by most of the women. The sprightly music of Derry’s Military Band, conducted by Captain W. S. King, had an enlivening effect. At the special table at luncheon, with the president, Mr P. F. Ryan, and stewards of the club, were the Mayor, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, and Mrs Macfarlane, Mr H. F. Nicoll, president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and Mrs Nicoll, Mr Frank Graham, vice-president of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, and Mr W. F. Parkinson, president of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club. Others present were Mrs William Hayward and Miss M. Hayward, Mrs A. I. Rattray, Mrs C. Flavell, Mrs C. E. Cross, Mrs P. A. Ardagh. L. Styche, and Mrs M. Baxter. RED CROSS SOCIETY OPAWA SUB-CENTRE Mrs D. E. Hansen presided at the sixth annual meeting of the Opawa sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, held at her home in Opawa road. The annual report, which was adopted, reviewed the work done during the year. Some members had attended fortnightly sewing meetings held at Mrs Hansen’s home and others had worked in their own homes. This work had resulted in a total of 93 new garments, besides several parcels of clothing containing sheets, men’s underwear, suits, trousers, cardigans, socks, and a heavy overcoat being sent to headquarters. A special effort was made by members to collect subscriptions for the Far East National Red Cross, and £l6 2s 6d was realised for the fund. Officers elected were:—President. Mrs D. E. Hansen: vice-president, Mrs A. Forbes; honorary secretaries, Mesdames R. Erwin and L. G. Blackwell; honorary treasurer, Mrs F. H. Polhill; committee, Mesdomes J. K. Stuart, M. L. Taylor, Gordon Lucas, W. Paton, R. A. Ferguson, J. Parr, L. L. Scott, Misses G. Thomson, A. Fraser, and N. Wills; honorary auditor, Mr H. J. Quarrel!. After the busin®ss session members and friends were entertained at afternoon tea by the committee. GIFT PARTIES An enjoyable “kitchen” evening party was held in St. Peter’s schoolroom, Kaikoura, in honour of Miss Adelaide Stubbersfleld, whose marriage will take place soon. The party was organised by the members of the Ladies’ Guild and Youth Fellowship League of St. Peter’s Church. Kaikoura. Winners of the competitions were Miss A. Stubbersfleld, Miss Betty Corney, Miss A. Stubbersfleld, and Miss L. Lane. Mr C. E. Ferris gave two monologues. The Rev. S. Corney expressed best wishes for the future happiness of Miss Stubbersfleld. who received many useful presents for her future home. An enjoyable time was spent at the home of Mrs H. McDonald (McLeod street) in honour of Miss Elwyn McDonald, whose marriage will take place shortly. Games and competitions were enjoyed. Miss McDonald received many green gifts for her future home.

In honour ■of Miss Mary Garland, whose marriage will take place this week, Mrs Ernest Edridge and Miss Patricia Simpson entertained Miss Garland and a number of her friends at a morning tea party, held at Beath’s on Saturday. The guests presented Miss Garland with a silver salver as a momento of the party. Those present besides the hostesses and the guest of honour were Mesdames George Simpson, J. R. Burt. H. O. Hewlett. Leslie Burt, C. F. Champion, A. R. E. Trent, Donald Meyers, R. Thompson, H, R. Williams, A. V. Sherratt, and lan Cromb, Misses Joyce Burt, Nora Quarrell, Patricia Clowes, Nora Stevens, Winifred Halliwell, and Dorothy Wauchop.

Miss Garland was again the guest of honour on Saturday afternoon, when Miss Marjorie , Braae entertained a number of friends at her home at Fendalton, and a presentation of a casserole in a silver stand was made to Miss Garland. Those present were Mrs Braae, who assisted her daughter, Miss Garland, Mesdames J. R. Burt, H. R. Williams, Leslie Burt, Hugh Thompson, Edgar Bowie, A. R. E. Trent, Misses Joan Burt, Mary Talbot, Nora Quarrell, Patricia Clowes, Molly Morrison, Nora Stevens, and Joan Rodd.
