FIRES IN SUBURBS

♦ TWO CALLS YESTERDAY Two calls to fires—one at Papanui and the other at Fendalton—were received by the Central Fire Brigade yesterday. The first outbreak was in two macrocarpa trees growing next to a fence on the property of Mr S. H. Martin, 10 Papanui road. The brigade received a call to the fire at 11.54 a.m., and had no difficulty in suppressing the flames. No damage was done to adjoining property. A detached tool-shed behind the home of Miss Nora Smythe, 36 Wairerapa terrace, Fendalton, was destroyed by fire in the afternoon, but the contents of the shed were saved. The brigade received advice of the outbreak, which was started by sparks from a rubbish fire, at 4.39.
